Map of Anchorage Graticule, including portions of Chugach State Park and MatSu Borough.

Description

The Anchorage, AK graticule is at latitude 61, longitude -149. It includes most of the Municipality of Anchorage, except for the western edge of the city itself (Kincaid Park, parts of Anchorage International Airport, and most of the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail); the graticule includes the nearby communities of Chugiak, Eagle River, Wasilla, Palmer, Houston, and Big Lake.

Accessibility

Large sections of the graticule are open and undeveloped land; Chugach State Park accounts for roughly one-quarter of Anchorage graticule's land area. The graticule completely encloses Knik Arm and includes a portion of Chickaloon Bay, which together make approximately 10% of the graticule inacessible by land. Military installations pose potential access problems as well:

Notable Dates

None yet; on the first official Saturday meetup date (May 24, 2008), the meetup location was in the middle of Knik Arm.

The meetup location for May 31, 2008 is at elevation 4400', approximately thirty miles north of Palmer. Nearest road access is Archangel Drive, an offshoot of Willow Fishook Road; as the name implies, this road splits from the Parks Highway near the town of Willow. Road access ends approx. 1 mile south of the meeting point, and two further ascents are required to reach the exact spot. Good luck!
* Google Map - Archangel Dr is visible at center bottom (south) of the screen.

The 5/31/2008 location for the 60,-140 graticule is closer to Anchorage and to a major highway (Seward Hwy.), but its location may not be any easier to reach, sitting approximately 1 mile ESE of Mt. Alpenglow, at elevation 3650' (considerably higher than downtown Anchorage at 100').
