The cycle path crosses Hobson's Brook, named after Thomas Hobson, a livery stable owner in Cambridge in the 16th century. To ensure fair rotation of his horses, he offered his customers the choice of the horse nearest the door, or none at all. The phrase "Hobson's choice", meaning "take it or leave it", comes from this practice.
