Welcome to geohashing! It's a fine first expedition report, you apparently got the important stuff right straightaway.
Don't worry about not having a GPS, I went geohashing without one for almost a year. It may be a little more difficult sometimes, but more difficult == more fun. And the upside is that you don't have to do that stupid GPS dance (one step to the left, two to the right, three back...) on the last 5 metres when the last decimal isn't correct, instead you can just declare "Here I am". In a monotone area like a meadow or a forest, one patch of grass or tree is as good as the other anyway, as far as I am concerned.
