Combination of both graticules

I was going to wait for discussion about combining the two graticules, but I got impatient. Sorry if I offended anyone by my actions, it just seemed like the best course of action. --Pnutbutr 17:21, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Washington, DC Super-Graticule

I'm okay with it. In fact, I'd already arranged my User:Phydeaux page to account for all four local grats. Afterall, Rockville/Gaithersburg and Silver Spring/Columbia are just as much "DC" as Reston and Woodbridge, and certainly moreso than Waldorf or Easton/Cambridge. --Phydeaux 18:18, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I actually liked it better as separate pages, like London. - Cerulean

I think it's better to have the DC/Baltimore area page consolidated. Since people will probably be meeting up in whichever graticule's hashpoint is most convenient that day, it's good to have a single page for coordination. The lat/long demarcations are artificial anyways - it makes more sense to focus on cities. --ciel 19:38, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I was thinking of combining DC with Baltimore this morning, but decided to hold off on it. While I agree that people will most likely visit which ever hashpoint is closest during that day, I feel like some separation needs to be in place. Washington DC is actually divided by a meridian line, so there is a logical reason to join the two graticules. Baltimore is simply another city that shares many suburbs. The system doesn't really play nice with urban sprawl, but that is the system we have. --Pnutbutr 00:06, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Individual Meetup Discussions

I think it would be best if we could come to some sort of consensus on where to discuss individual meetups. While I like the idea of discussing each on their individual pages, this can lead to extra pages that no one visited. Perhaps we could start discussion on the graticule page in an "Upcoming Meetups" section, and move it to it's own page when it seems to have caught on, or after it happens, and dispose of it if nothing comes of it. Any thoughts on this? --EpeeGnome 27 June 2008

I'm going to go ahead and do this since there has been no discussion on this for almost 2 weeks. I'll put it back if someone complains. EpeeGnome 10 July 2008

I know I'm just talking to myself here, but I put it back the way it was, and divided locations which are notable from those which where visited. I see that we like to discuss upcoming meetups on the talk page, which makes sense in retrospect. EpeeGnome 12 July 2008

Saturday July 19

I am going to try for the East Graticule. The West is Lake Anna; perhaps easier but duller. Also, Lake Anna has leeches. So I'll try the Northern Neck. Looks like it is off a road and down a power line easement about 1/3 a mile. - Chuck

Saturday July 12

Saturday's point falls on private property in Woodbridge, VA. I figure we can probably show up & ask for permission to get to the hash, and at least get a photo. There's a park only several blocks away, so we can retire there for 1000 Blank White Cards, or, if the weather's poor, to Potomac Mills. -- Ciel 12 July 2008.

Ah good, someone else. I'm in then. EpeeGnome 12 July 2008

Dan: bring your Go board too, in case to0 few people show for BWC's. Well, I'm headed out. See y'all there. EpeeGnome 12 July 2008

I have recognized that geohashing is actually a three dimensional sport - just as important of "where" is "when." And not just "4pm", but "where 4pm falls on your particular timeline." My 4pm today falls in the middle of my nephew's birthday. A long winded way of saying "have fun, I can't go." If you care. Enjoy. - Chuck

Saturday June 28

Until the above is discussed, I'll start the talk about June 28 here. East DC is out of the question unless someone has a boat, so it looks like [West DC] for a lot of people. It's quite a drive for me, but I'll go if I think at least a few other people are going. Perhaps we could meet at the business parking lot W-NW of the point, and hike the 600 feet to the spot after we've got a few people together. It would save us trampling on lawns, and provide plenty of parking. If the business seems unfriendly, we could congregate at the fast food restaurant just across the street from there instead. EpeeGnome 27 June 2008

The cul-de-sac SE of the spot is closer, but I guess the parking lot provides better access without going thru private lawns. - Kassad

The way I see it, if we're going to hit the real spot anyway, then it doesn't really matter how close the meetup point is, only how convenient. EpeeGnome 28 June 2008

I say we meet up in the parking lot at 3:30-4:00 PM (bring a radio so we can double check there's no one already trying the point). At 4:00ish we'll walk east to the point. There's more parking here and no real chance we'll walk on private property (well, we won't be noticed at least). Jmacdonagh 15:52, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Alright, I have to leave before 2pm to get there on time, so I'm headed out. I'm bringing a radio, tuned to channel 6, and the game One Thousand Blank White Cards. People better show with that long of a drive. -EpeeGnome 28 June 2008

Saturday June 21

Saturday's location in the Eastern DC graticule looks to be about 200m N of MD-50/MD-301, near Parole, MD. Parking on 50 and hiking up might not be a great idea, but about 350m NW of the spot there's a cul-de-sac at the end of Lavall Dr that would probably work. Google page for directions purposes here. --Katie

Saturday June 14

If I'm not mistaken, Saturday's location is in Founder's Park in Old Town Alexandria. This is a great location for a meetup! I'll do the best I can to be there, and I'll bring my bag of card games too. Anybody up for Fluxx, Give Me the Brain, or Guillotine? - Cerulean

The hash is a very nice location, Founder's Park in Alexandria. I'm probably going to ride the metro in and try to be there around 4 pm. Anyone else planning on showing up? - (unsigned comment by ActionJackson)

I'm definitely going to be there! This is a fantastic meetup spot. I can provide rides for folks who live in the Sterling/Reston area (must have valid certification of Not Being a Serial Killer). Looking forward to some games! -- Ciel 18:05 UTC, June 13, 2008.

Saturday June 7

DC West is fairly near me. Anyone else planning to go? Looks like private land, near a house, so I doubt we'll be able to hit the spot exactly. It is in the woods a bit, so I think it's worth a try. --EpeeGnome

I'll be there! I'm in the Sterling area of Virginia - if anyone near Sterling or Reston needs a ride, drop me a line on my talk page. I've got a USB GPS module for my computer, so we should be able to get pretty close. -- Dan 6:18 AM UTC, June 7, 2008.

Saturday May 31

Best location for DC is in DC East, just east of Brandywine, MD. If nothing else, meet at intersection of Tower Road and Old Indian Head Road.

For those of us West of DC who can't feasibly make the DC East hashpoint, Saturday's point in the Frederick graticule is very convenient - near the Potomac in the Sterling/Reston area. I'm planning on being there. -- Dan 22:58 UTC, May 30, 2008.

Alternatively, Sunday's meetup is south of Dulles Airport, near Centreville and Chantilly. Anyone interested?

Um, actually, it's way out in Virginia. Perhaps you used the reference implementation's earlier, incorrect hash? -- Dan 23:02 UTC, May 30, 2008.

Recent Locations

Anyone mind deletion of the "large house" comment about 2008-05-22? From looking at the satellite photo, and from what I know from having driven past that stretch of road more times than I can remember, I'm fairly certain it's a building attached to the private school there. The disturbing possibility of someone showing up at a private, all-girls boarding school explaining how something they read on the internet told them to go there just strikes me has having disaster written all over it. 66.16.55.157 08:09, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

While we're on the topic does anyone mind the deletion of places no-one went to? EpeeGnome 27 June 2008

I'm just going to go ahead and delete those 2 locations no-one visited. EpeeGnome 10 July 2008
