About Me

My name is Neil. My status is geohash newbie.

My user name is a play on words based on computer source-code and is a tribute to controlled folly.

I enjoy computer programming and wrote an implementation of Conway's Game of Life in BASIC in 1972. The virtual creatures were printed on a paper roll by a mechanical teletype. Those were the days. Later in 1976 I taught programming to school kids. We used Algol! We filled in coding forms and submitted them to be punched onto cards for the overnight run. The next day we'd get the error message print-outs or rarely a successful run.

One of my follies is to go geohashing. A totally pointless but quite pleasing activity. Another is to walk from Cape St Vincent (Portugal) to Istanbul (Turkey). 1600 miles completed by the summer of 2010 with about 5400 miles to go. I wonder if there are any Déjà Vu Geohash achievements for that. I have many GPS tracks for evidence. During the long winter nights I might check.

My Geohashes

2010-08-07 52 0 - At 4pm on Saturday 7th August 2010, I visited the co-ordinates of the day in the Cambridge UK graticule. No one else was there. Next time, I'll pre-advertise my intention to make an expedition. This was my first ever geohash.
