Description

Whangarei is the most northerly city in New Zealand, and is the regional capital of Northland. It has a population of just over 50,000 and is the 12th largest city in New Zealand.

This Graticle also includes, from South to North, the towns of Waipu (pop ~1500), Ruakaka (pop ~3500), Hikurangi (pop ~1400), Kawakawa (pop ~1300), Paihia (pop ~1800), and Russell (pop ~800). Russell is the site of the first permanent European settlement in New Zealand (known as Kororareka), and just north of Paihia is the Waitangi Treaty Grounds where in 1840 the Waitangi Treaty between the British Queen Victoria (the Crown), and the Maori Tribes of New Zealand was first signed. This treaty is considered to be the founding document of New Zealand as a country.

The graticle is about 70% sea, with most of the land area being farmland. There are three large forests, Tangihua in the south, and Russell and Opua forests in the north. In addition there are numerous other smaller parks and reserves throughout the region.
