Plans

Mid-day visit with the kids.

I will be heading to a BBQ on the east side for the 4th not too far from there, so I might stop by. What time were you planning on being out at the point? - AeroIllini (talk) 18:18, 2 July 2015 (EDT)

Going to the IMAX beforehand, which gets out at 12:30. Best guess would be 1:15 or so. Park first, then missile site. --Thomcat (talk) 01:00, 4 July 2015 (EDT)

Where exactly should I be going? That is, which park? There seem to be several in the area.

And the hashpoint turned out to be a hillside instead of a park, alas. --Thomcat (talk) 10:28, 5 July 2015 (EDT)

Sorry guys, my schedule on the 4th ended up not being complimentary with an expedition. It sounds like you all had fun! - AeroIllini (talk) 01:09, 6 July 2015 (EDT)

Expedition

The IMAX film we decided on was Humpback Whales, and as it was showing twice, I went for the earlier one. That allowed us to return home for a quick bite to eat instead of making the direct trip. Naturally, everything ran slow from that point.

Managed to talk my learning permit son into accompanying us, so he could drive back and get some road practice in. We found the traffic circle next to the park easily, spotting Trekkieyk parked nearby. Only problem was, my satellite view of a nice roadside park didn't contain elevation cues - this was actually a steep embankment leading down to a fence.

Parked myself and met with Trekkieyk, then we walked over and discussed the options. The hashpoint was probably close to the fence and no signs forbidding trespass were spotted - the consensus was to go for it. After a last look about for AeroIllini, we went over the edge.

Sandals were found to be less than ideal for this descent, but we reached the fence easily (thanks gravity!). No electrification was found on the fence in question, and the hashpoint was estimated to be 4m on the other side. Climbing over, the point settled back onto the road side of the fence. All the while, a curious horse looked on.

Finally agreeing on a spot, we marked a large X in the lower hillside. The K was not forthcoming from actively resisting ground cover, so we called it a geohash success and returned up the hill.

Next was the Nike site, clearly visible on the map even though no road approaches were noted. My observation of the aerial photo indicated one of the three roads would work for us, and it was only after we went up the third that we found an imposing gate clearly labeled with No Trespassing and Video Surveillance signs. This is likely to be the access point, and therefore this second expedition failed.
