Location

Today's hashpoint is at the Residenzschloss Dresden (Dresden Castle / the Dresden Royal Palace)! It was the residence of the electors and kings of Saxony from 1547 to 1918. More specifically, the hashpoint is in the northwestern corner of the palace and hits the Historisches Grünes Gewölbe (Historic Green Vault) on the ground floor and the Neues Grünes Gewölbe (New Green Vault) on the first upper floor. Both are treasure exhibitions full of valuables (gold, jewels, ivory, amber and works of art). On the second upper floor there are "stately rooms" according to the floor plan. This is probably the most valuable hashpoint so far, with many millions in precious metals and jewelry within the GPS error radius.

Country: Germany; state: Sachsen (Saxony, EU:DE:SN); district: Dresden; Ortsamt: Altstadt; statistischer Stadtteil: Innere Altstadt.

Plans

Danatar: I will go there but don't know yet at what time. I have been to the Historic Green Vault twice before and I hope to find pictures (though it could be that it wasn't allowed to take pictures, I don't remember) or a ticket (which I doubt) to prove it.

  • I've reached the hashpoint in the ground floor and now I'm in the upper floor 3 rooms from the spot. GPS reception is bad -- Danatar (talk) 15:39, 23 April 2017 (GMT+02:00)

full story

As planned I started towards the castle, going there by bike. I arrived at 14:45 and bought a ticket for the Vault and the other parts of the castle. The tickets to the Historic Green Vault only allow entrance at a certain time, so I had to wait vor 15:00 to enter. Instead of going directly to the hashpoint, I took a look at the exhibits in the earlier rooms first (amber room, ivory room, silver room), reaching the spot at 15:20. Since it wasn't allowed to take pictures, I made a secret selfie with my phone at the spot while pretending to check my messages or similar. After completing the Historic Green Vault (heraldry room, jewels room) I went upstairs to the New Green Vault. There it was allowed to take pictures but my camera was still at the cloakroom, so the picture I took of the hashpoint is a bit blurry. Hooray, hashpoint reached at two different elevations. Besides lots of valuable works of art the New Green Vault also houses the 'Dresden Green Diamond', the largest green diamond in the world.

After the Vaults I climbed the tower where I had a nice view over Dresden. It was nice and sunny at that time while on the route there had been a bit of rain. Then I visited the second part of the castle, with Armory and Turkish Chamber. At last, I walked around the outside of the castle to get to the corner the hashpoint was nearest to. While inside neither my GPS unit nor my phone GPS had had satellite reception, next to the castle it was only a little better, with accuracy low and the coordinates jumping around. After walking to and fro for a while I even managed to catch the hashpoint's coordinates.

Then I decided to go home as I had a very important exam coming up and more than two hours without studying on a day off was more than I could bear. On the way back I tried to keep as near to the direct line between my home and the hashpoint as possible, thinking much too late about the juggernaut achievement. It would have been possible to stay within the 1:20 ratio if I had planned for it but as it was I still was within 1:10 without even trying.
