Expedition

Went here on the way back from 2023-06-10 global.

It's now six months later and I decided to write up what I can remember. After visiting the globalhash the previous day and meeting up with lots of other hashers, I cycled west to the Sechs-Seen-Platte, a curious formation of six not-too-small lakes in a forest, with a hill in the middle. On top of the hill stood a viewing tower, which rewarded me with a great panorama over the surrounding area. From there, I cycled north past a very crowded natural open air bath and into the city of Duisburg. I visited some sights like the cathedral (there happened to be a free concert when I arrived), the town hall, the stadium, and the river Ruhr, among others. Cycling along it, I saw much of the harbour, which is Europe's biggest inland port. I even saw some of the old coal infrastructure, but in the end had to race to make it to the main station in time.

I made it and took a train to Essen, where I had 15 minutes to cycle through the inner city. Based on this short jaunt, it seems to me the ugliest and most dull of the 15 major German cities. It was already 9:30 pm; I made it back to the station just in time again and took two trains north, eventually exiting at Marl-Hamm in the dark. I cycled east into a large forest called Die Haard, where I was planning to spend the night (and hopefully not get killed by Bruce Willis in my sleep). I cycled far enough that the street wasn't too loud, then went off the path and spent some time searching for a sufficiently empty and flat spot for my sleeping mat. I eventually found an okay one, though the night was pretty uncomfortable as I had again forgotten to bring mosquito spray.

The next morning, I packed my things and set off cycling through the forest, which was much hillier than I expected (Wikipedia describes the Haard as a "hill landscape"). I eventually reached another tall viewing tower at the highest point of the forest and enjoyed the views from up there, all alone. Eventually, I continued cycling through the forest until I came out the other end and reached this hash, which was located at the very edge of another small forest only a kilometre from the big one. I spent some time planning the rest of day and eventually decided that I'd have to hurry if I wanted to comfortably make it to 2023-06-11 52 8 and home. No rest for the weary. Read on here.
