Hmm, interesting question. I could imagine that it works this way: 1) the surface freezes 2) some of the water below drains into the ground so there's air under the ice 3) it gets a little warmer inside because light enters through the ice 4) the underside of the ice "roof" thaws but the released water sticks to the underside of the ice and forms little upside-down streams while flowing away to the sides 5) these "streams" freeze solid again and create little ridges 6) repeat. ... but that's just my (hopefully plausible) guess. --dawidi 23:43, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
