Geohashing talk:Community Portal/Renaming suggestions

From Geohashing

sectioning

Proposal: This should be organized by country or at least continent, to make it easier for potential renamers to look at areas they are familiar with.

Graticules where major continent or country is not clear will be listed separately. --Superbest 23:48, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

locals

I am in general opposed to renaming graticules just because someone who isn't anywhere near them thinks that another name better represents the area. Let the locals change the name if it turns out that it is named after a suburb or an unfamiliar place. -Robyn 00:47, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, considering that most of them got their name just because someone who isn't anywhere near them thinks that he found a name that represents the area, I think the idea of finding a better name isn't completely invalid. If there are any locals to rename things, even better. :) -- relet 11:56, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
I see no reason to think an automatically-generated list of bad names would be less bad than a human-generated-list of bad names. In fact, based off five in my state, it is consistently the opposite. Arlo (talk) 06:54, 23 January 2021 (UTC) and also at 18:01 UTC, 14 March 2012

quality assurance

Oppose to the page as a whole. Most examples I checked are either wrong or there was a good reason why the graticule was named differently. No graticule should be renamed without a proper manual check on authoritative sources. --Ekorren 14:53, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

That's what the page is suggesting, basically. -- relet 16:10, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

designations

Oppose renaming states/provinces to countries in the US/Canada; all country abbreviations in graticule names; and most renaming at this point by someone who doesn't geohash there. -Robyn 04:47, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Norwegian situation

General comment about Norway graticules: People in Norway named graticules mostly not after settlements, but after municipalities. Since those usually span several graticules, this also explains the many east/west/north/south graticules where no other half exists. It is debatable whether we want to keep that, or generally rename norwegian graticules according to the global conventions. --Ekorren 17:48, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

largest?

The rule about naming after the largest community should not be applied slavishly and definitely not applied by a computer. When there are multiple similar sized communities, or there is almost no civilization at all, and the graticule is characterized by a well-known geographical feature contained within it, I think it's fine to name it after that. For example there are about 20 Longviews in the US and the one in Washington is known mainly for its proximity to a volcano that is known worldwide. Everyone is going to call it the "Mount St. Helen's graticule" if they go there, so call it that. If a most of a small country or region is in a graticule, go ahead and name the graticule for it. Was this page made by a computer looking at populations? Anyway, it makes me angry and I don't like being angry, so I'm going to go remove it from my watchlist and forget about it. -Robyn 19:52, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

subnational

Why is it suggested that Placename, State names become Placename, USA names? This is a bad idea because many placenames are repeated from state to state. And it's uncommon for them to be referred to that way by locals. -Robyn 04:39, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Quoth the instructions: "in the case of USA, Canada or Australia: identify the correct state for the graticule." - the generator wasn't smart enough to do that at the time. -- relet 11:53, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
"Identify" isn't the same as "change the name to properly include." If you made it clear you weren't trying to undo one of the earliest mass projects on the wiki my hatred for this page might decrease enough to actually consider some of the moves. I honestly thought some crazy person wanted everything to be "USA" or "Canada" and two letter country abbreviations. Why didn't you just go through and do the substitutions before posting? -Robyn 19:08, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
In the end, what are the substitutions good for?
I guess I posted the list never really expect anyone to systematically validate every single entry. I am sorry if that list made a wrong impression that I wanted to rename half of the world to exactly these names. I really hoped the introduction would correctly express my intention to just provide a hint to which graticules may contain another, possibly larger place they could be named after than the one that provided their name back then. For people to browse on a lazy afternoon and get some ideas, and then follow their common sense and sensible renaming procedures. *And* the page is really old by now. -- relet 20:08, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

pragmatism

Opposed. Leave the names alone. If the graticle should be named differently because of the municipalities/landmarks within the graticle, the geohashers in the graticle will make the change. Splitdipless 19:08, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

I agree with this sentiment in general. There are a few local graticules on this list, but given that we went around the horn on this issue very early on, the nearby names are fine. I intend to remove entries where "not to be moved" has been entered, or the new suggestion only eliminates a state/province name. I think this page will be taken as less offensive if it didn't have as many entries. -- Jevanyn 13:32, 16 December 2011 (EST)

Removal of pre tags

Is anyone opposed to turning this page into a normal list and removing the <pre> tags? --Fippe (talk) 11:38, 23 January 2021 (UTC)
