Talk:Memphis, Tennessee

From Geohashing

Any interest in a potential West Memphis area meet-up tomorrow while I'm passing by and there's a decent-looking hashpoint? The problem is I can't predict my timing very precisely, since there are a lot of variables involved, but if you're local and interested, it'd at least be worth a try! -Haberdasher (talk) 12:13, 23 August 2013 (EDT)

Old/Interesting Plans

This is where I'm going to archive all the old plans from the main page. I'll move them here after they've been on the main page for a month. -MayorOfBoxTown 10:20, 16 March 2012 (EDT)

Weekend of 2012-03-10:

  • The Oxford graticule has a close hash (relative to Collierville) for Friday, so we may attempt that this evening. From my apartment, it's a 40 minute drive south, with just a quick hop on US-78. Doesn't look like it's on private property, but I'm not sure. From google maps, it appears to be about a dozen yards into a line of trees, off of one of those big swaths they cut for the power lines and towers. Except it doesn't look like there's any towers... interesting. Who knows?! Let's find out.

Pi Day 2012:

  • The East Memphis geohash for today is the closest geohash to my apartment I think I've ever seen. Google maps shows it to be in a residential area, nearby an old folks home, very close to somebody's back yard. I can't tell if they have a fence, as there are trees in the way, but the hash point looks like it's practically on top of this hypothetical fence. So this one could be easy or complicated. Either way, I'm thinking we'll bring a frisbee and a dog...

Update: We ended up not going; had important things to take care of that night. -MayorOfBoxTown 10:02, 15 March 2012 (EDT)

Weekend of 2012-03-17:

  • On Friday, the West Memphis geohash looks pretty interesting. It's on the west bank of the river, but on Tennessee land. Right out front a farm or house that looks (at least, from google maps' view) to be abandoned. Rusty cars or something all over the place, the land doesn't look maintained. It's very close to the river, so I suspect it got destroyed with the bad flooding last year. If that's so, it should make for a really interesting adventure and some great photography. Assuming the weather permits...

2012-04-01:

  • Amanda and Mayor had plans to visit the 2012-04-01 34 -89 geohash, which was down in Holly Springs National Forest, but they didn't write anything here beforehand.

Weekend of 2012-04-07

  • The Saturday geohash in East Memphis is totally feasible. It's in a field just off Raleigh LaGrange road, not far from I-40. There's even a sidewalk and everything. Assuming nobody's built anything there since Google took a picture of it, I think we can finally deflower the East Memphis graticule. It's also my mom's birthday!

Other Discussion

I would almost prefer to see 35,-89 used for the Memphis area Graticule, as it better encompasses the majority of the Memphis area and it's eastward growth into Fayette county including Oakland. Sure this cuts off downtown Memphis and eastern AR from the graticule, but it's not like there's much reason to go either place.  :) -Jaofos 15:08, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Done! West Memphis, Arkansas is ready for Geohashing. Remember, Graceland (and Elvis Presley Boulevard) are located there - the coveted Elvis Geohash Achievement! --Thomcat 20:25, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

No, I'm putting it back. Sorry, but Downtown is simply the place to be, and Memphis actually splits the Graticules. And quite frankly, I'll be damned if I'm going to be grouped in with West Memphis. :P

Okay, fine by me. I only cleaned up what the previous user did. At this point, the All Graticules page should be updated so both Graticules point to Memphis, and the West Memphis page should be deleted. There is a category that could be added also - Category:Split cities. --Thomcat 21:50, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Changed this to an Active Graticule, even though no hash has been successfully reached yet. We tried through, and will continue to do so. Also added our names to the list. Was going to remove those other five dudes who are probably very inactive, but who knows if they're still here? Didn't seem right. --MayorOfBoxTown 12:23, 5 March 2012 (EST)
