Revision as of 20:08, 25 August 2010

Proposal: This should be organized by country or at least continent, to make it easier for potential renamers to look at areas they are familiar with.

Graticules where major continent or country is not clear will be listed separately. --Superbest 23:48, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

I am in general opposed to renaming graticules just because someone who isn't anywhere near them thinks that another name better represents the area. Let the locals change the name if it turns out that it is named after a suburb or an unfamiliar place. -Robyn 00:47, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, considering that most of them got their name just because someone who isn't anywhere near them thinks that he found a name that represents the area, I think the idea of finding a better name isn't completely invalid. If there are any locals to rename things, even better. :) -- relet 11:56, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Why is it suggested that Placename, State names become Placename, USA names? This is a bad idea because many placenames are repeated from state to state. And it's uncommon for them to be referred to that way by locals. -Robyn 04:39, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

"Identify" isn't the same as "change the name to properly include." If you made it clear you weren't trying to undo one of the earliest mass projects on the wiki my hatred for this page might decrease enough to actually consider some of the moves. I honestly thought some crazy person wanted everything to be "USA" or "Canada" and two letter country abbreviations. Why didn't you just go through and do the substitutions before posting? -Robyn 19:08, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
In the end, what are the substitutions good for?
I guess I posted the list never really expect anyone to systematically validate every single entry. I am sorry if that list made a wrong impression that I wanted to rename half of the world to exactly these names. I really hoped the introduction would correctly express my intention to just provide a hint to which graticules may contain another, possibly larger place they could be named after than the one that provided their name back then. For people to browse on a lazy afternoon and get some ideas, and then follow their common sense and sensible renaming procedures. *And* the page is really old by now. -- relet 20:08, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
