Plans
Aiming for a 4pm meetup. Bring a towel. This will be my first hash with my new phone, and also my longest return bike journey, so there's plenty of potential for disaster. Fans of chaos should probably attend.
A toast! Quiet! Shut up! I'm ah, I got words. I'm saying. This is an auspicious day. We all know what day it is.
- What's auspicious? What day is it?
A glorious day for all the proud members of the allied planets. #towelday and #mouseoverday
Expedition
Well, the good news is I got there. But two punctures on the way didn't help - and it turns out 30 miles up and down hills (and on off-road trails) takes a lot longer than 30 miles on the flat. Yeah, I know, that's kind of obvious, right? So I got there late for the meetup. Not that anyone else turned up.
Apart from the punctures it was a nice trip. Alternating sections of gravel paths on cycle route 63 (the 'Ivanhoe trail') and quiet country roads. Needless to say it was the roads, not the gravel paths, that caused the punctures. Returning home, I skipped Leicester, and detoured via Enderby to get home without too much traffic. Total travel time was about eight hours, thanks to the punctures.
A nice man in the neighbouring cottage allowed me into the right field, and I got as close as the newly-planted growing crop would allow. I'm calling it a success. As my Nexus 4 battery died before arriving at the geohash, the only proof I have is the Strava ride track below, taken off my BlackBerry, which outlived the Nexus. But that's good enough, right?
A nice side note was that the village (well, eight houses and an empty phone box) of Short Heath is apparently famous for being the "Centre of England". Who knew? And now I've been there, thanks to xkcd. Cool.
Did I mention I got two punctures?
