Location

Back of a car dealership at Lagrange & Joliet Rds. in Countryside

Participants

OtherJack and mother

Haberdasher and mother

Plans

Meet at 12 noon in front of the dealership.

Also, I just noticed it only appears to be <10 feet from the exterior wall, so maybe the gps's will be in error range even if we approach from outside. We'll find out I guess... -- OtherJack (talk) 01:16, 12 July 2014 (EDT)

Expedition

Haberdasher and OtherJack agreed to try to meet up at the hashpoint, though it was unclear whether it would be accessible- it was within the Volkswagen dealership's building, but looked potentially close enough to the walls to be within range from outside, and it was possible that it might be in a showroom or other accessible area anyway. It was a good enough excuse to go for a ride and meet up, anyway.

The day started with it pouring rain, but by the time Haberdasher reached the dealership a few minutes before the decided time of noon, the rain had died down, though the sky was still quite gloomy and threatening to start raining again. After a bit of waiting, OtherJack showed up with his mother! Haberdasher's mother was there as well, and after introductions were made, the two mothers got to talking while Haberdasher and OtherJack began their hunt for the wild hashpoint.

A short walk around part of the dealership later, we found that the point was just inside a garage, which had its doors wide open. We mentioned briefly to the workers that we might need to pop inside for our Internet game, and they were happy to oblige. A few feet in, and, though the two GPS devices disagreed on its precise location, it was clear that we had reached the hashpoint. Celebratory picture-taking ensued. We then explained in more detail the concept of geohashing to one of the workers who seemed particularly interested, named Ryan, and told him about the achievement for reaching a hashpoint where you work- no idea if he'll end up checking it out and seeing this page, but if so, thanks again, Ryan!

Returning back to where we had left our mothers, we found that OtherJack's mother had entered the car with Haberdasher's mother, and the two were chatting quite amicably, having found that they had a lot in common. Remembering that OtherJack's mother had expressed interest in reaching the hashpoint, the three circled the building- from the other way around, just for variety's sake- and re-entered the garage, ducking out quickly after getting one more picture for fear of getting in the way of their work. The two hashers talked about geohashing and life in general, their mothers continued their previous conversation, and Haberdasher introduced OtherJack to her dogs, which were in the back seat of her car. All things considered, this expedition went quite smoothly.

Achievements

Haberdasher and OtherJack earned the Ambassador achievement
by obtaining permission from Volkswagen dealership garage workers to access the (41, -87) geohash on 2014-07-12.

Now all three of OtherJack's successful Ambassador hashes have been on the 12th of the month! Very strange indeed. He hopes he is not doomed to fail on days that are not the 12th.
