Expedition

Mrs. Tilley biking gallantly.

The past week had been exceptionally warm and beautiful for this time of year. The temperature had been +20 and the Sun had been shining from cloudless day. Amongst all the yard-work and chilling in the wooden hot tub we got some time for hashpoints also - at least when they fall only 1,09 km away.

Our parking spot.

Our Daughter was having a bit of a flue and was a bit too tired to go hashing, but luckily grandma and grandpa paid a surprise visit hoping to do some grilling. So of course me and Mrs. Tilley immediately said: "Here, take care of the little one for a while, while we visit the hashpoint." For our method of transportation we chose bikes, although that meant detouring a bit. Juggernaut Achievement would have been possible, but not without swimming/wading, the swamp in between our house and hashpoint was flooded because the water surface in the lake was very high.

The forest was homogenous pine forest.

So we set out, and after a couple of bends and hills and about 2 km of cycling we were as close as we could get by bikes. We parked them and set out for walking the remaining 300 meters. The forest was homogenous pine forest, with charred-dry moss on the ground. There certainly was a forest fire warning in place. The route climbed atop a small hill, and the hashpoint was on the far side of the hilltop. What the point onlooked, was actually almost a ravine, at least in Finnish terms. The view was unusually broad when it comes to Finnish hashpoints. Not every one lands on a swamp, it seems!

On the hashpoint.

We admired the view and took a few photos, placing the camera dangerously to a very small branch of a tree to get a bit higher point of view. The Sun was scorching on a dry pine forest like this, and made us long for the home lake (the water of which was already +18 today) quickly. So we backtracked to our bikes, and saw some elk tracks on the dry moss, too. On the way home there was even some refreshing snow on the roadside. A nice, quick trip!
