The first successful geohash in the New York, NY graticule took place on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 in Ozone Park, Queens.

I was really excited to see the hash fall in New York City and even more excited when I saw it was easily accessible by the subway. I took the A Train out to 80th St in Ozone Park, Queens and set off walking the five blocks to the hash. The walk involved tracing the perimeter of an old and rather overgrown cemetery. Determined googling later identified it as identified as Bayside Cemetery, one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in New York State. The hash itself was on top of a cute little house with both a front and backyard and a pool (my mind was thoroughly blown that such luxuries could be found within the city). I think the point was just inside the house, but there were alleys on both sides so I was able to get well within the margin of error of my phone's GPS.
