Expedition
I (Patrick) looked at the geohashes in the late morning and noted that today’s was in a reasonably convenient location: nearby bike path, nearby train station, on a road, but on a road that looked quiet. However I had other plans and uhhh well uhhmm basically it’s all just too hard and I haven’t got very much sleep because I’ve basically just been doing work and Factorio Space Age for the last week so if it’s not launching simulated rockets, or critically important for my continued ability to pay for rent and food, uhh.
Thus, instead, I went to Kane’s house and we worked on our ongoing project to learn how to program computers faster, and also to drink beers and, when he looked away for more than 11 seconds, also popping up Factorio Space Age and worked on upgrading my steel smelter to actually fill a belt full of steel .
Anyway, so we did all that, had dinner, and suddenly it was 11.15pm and I wanted to go home. My plan was to catch the tram. However, Kane’s wife needed to run a late night errand, by car, that was near (read: not in exactly the opposite direction from) the hashpoint. Realising I had two potential new-hashers, and a mode of conveyance that could take us to Glen Waverley in the 45 minutes remaining in the day, I suggested hashing.
This plan was readily accepted, and we were soon stuck in traffic in Melbourne’s central business district, moving at a glacial pace and watching drunk people totter around in early Halloween costumes.
The minutes started to tick down, approaching midnight, and I started to get worried, but then I was told that the GPS-automatic-navigator thingy takes traffic into account and was confident we would make it there by 11.48pm. Indeed, soon we were on the open road, burning rubber and scorning laggards.
As we approach the hashpoint, I realised this was an opportunity for a speed-racer achievement. I suggested this to Kane (who was driving), and we did some quick calculations and determined that racing down the street, even at the built-up area default speed limit of 50km/hr, would be extremely dangerous due to the parked cars, poor visibility, and speed-bumps. Alas.
Kane parked the car, and we got out to take proof pictures. As it turned out, by luck we had parked precisely on the geohash, requiring us to scooch up close to the car to get adequate proof.
