About

The day's hash was a small distance into a forest south of Charlotte.

Expedition

excellentdude: It was my birthday and the last weekend before another semester of school started, so I was ready to get in some geohashing. When the coordinates came out, they appeared to be just a little bit into a forest from alongside a farmer's field. It wasn't too far away, and I figured this would be a fairly easy location to get permission to access so I headed out. I had rained all through the previous night and most of the morning. By the mid-afternoon when I went, it was still cloudy with a couple drops of rain sporadically falling here and there. I eventually found the right place to turn off and pulled into the long private driveway. When I drove up, it appeared no one was home, but I tried the doorbell anyway. Fortunately, a nice man named Mike answered. I explained to him a little bit about what geohashing was, gave him a copy of the diplomatic passport, and told him it was my birthday. He was rather quiet, but cool with letting me access the point so off I went!

I took my umbrella from my car in case it began to rain again; however, it later turned out to be handy for other purposes. For the most part, the hash proved rather easy to get to. I had to walk a good ways along the edge of the field and the forest, but there was a perfect path to walk along and do this. When I entered the forest, the trees weren't too thick and there were just some tall, wet weeds to contend with. As I approached the hash, the going got a little tougher. The vegetation became thicker, thornier, and stickier. I was using my umbrella to beat back plants for the last several meters. After circling around to get my GPS to settle, I found the right point. Success! I took the normal pictures and then swatted my way through the thorny plants to get out of the forest. On the way out, I took pictures of the crops because I don't know what they were. If I geohashing around here, I really should learn these things. I got back to the house just in time as Mike's wife was attempting to leave and I was accidentally blocking a large portion of the driveway. Oops! But I got out of the way, headed home, and all was well. Happy birthday geohash to me!
