Expedition

With a few minutes to spare, I headed for the Sizewell beach car park for a few tranquil minutes. The lighthouse at Southwold was flashing every 8 or 9 seconds. There were many other marker buoys flashing out at sea. There were many lights at an offshore tax free ship re-fuelling zone. As midnight approached I retraced my route towards the hashpoint.

Oops - Busted! I parked at the roadside and left my side-lights on. There was a handy hole in the hedge. The hashpoint was 150 metres away - perhaps a five minute round trip. I reached the point and noticed a car turning round in the road. I got the proof photo and the car started flashing its lights. Oh dear - what excuse can I get away with this time? I headed towards the field perimeter and reached it just as the police emerged through the hedge hole. There followed a strange exchange. I was muttering things about owls and nightingales. They seemed to be checking that my car was not abandoned and that I was OK. They didn't seem too suspicious and I didn't have to identify myself or get my car tax and insurance checked. I was not breath tested either. Perhaps they were about to go off-shift. In any case I'd have passed all the tests.

This is a somewhat sensitive area less than 2km from Sizewell nuclear power station. It's possible that my unusual pattern of behaviour was picked up by site security and I was being checked up on. In that case they get 10/10 for their response time.
