This one was a no-brainer. An assortment of geohashing companions was assembled online, with three of us (Ed, Lachie and myself) assembling in physical form - The Carlton Gardens being the venue. Lachie and myself on fixed and single-speeds, unrespectively, Ed on a free-wheeling, geared bicycle of some sort.
Off we went! Through the city and its teetering new buildings being put together by cranes in the sky. Along the Yarra and its bendy bike path.
And there we met Laura, who had ridden out to meet us and had turned around, allowing herself to be caught up.
We executed a rather circuitous loop to exit the Yarra Bike Path and get onto a rail bridge crossing the river. This immediately put us right in the thick of the rather patrician suburb of Toorak with all it's grand houses and windy, concrete streets. Hilly too.
But within moments we were slowing down along a path through a park - the hash was near.
Lachie and I wandered around getting the best proximity for our GPSs - Lachie achieved an impressive 1.546m. All the more impressive, in fact, given the hash was actually on the other side of a residential fence. A large, wooden wall about 2.5m high and not one to try scaling.
Conveniently, I discovered an unlocked gate a few metres along so I stuck my arm through and took a photo of the exact hash location - a leafy garden below someone's deck.
Hash achieved, we were off. We had brought some emergency beers but this was not an emergency - there was a perfectly good pub not too far off in Armadale, with only a frequently lowered boom gate and a rather large hill standing in our way.
We drank these beers, and ate pizzas, all to the calming tunes of the mid-2000s wafting over the outdoor speakers. And as the sun began to set we remounted our bikes and returned to our respective homes. With only more lowered boom gates standing in our way.
