Expedition
I don't drive to geohashes. A bicycle is much better. If I need to drive for a geohash it's probably not worth going to... Today was an exception. Melbourne is on day three of a heatwave (39, 39, 37), and the geohash sounded like the perfect excuse to for a morning expedition for outside time with somewhat less heat.
As usual, I was disorganised and set off mid morning, rather than the early morning that you might think was sensible. As I reached the top of Mt Dandenong, I a comfortable temperature and a quite mountain, with all the sensible folk not coming up in the heat (and also, risk of bushfires...).
The first bit of the walk was easy, 500 meters along a wide path following the contour round to a lookout and glider launching site. It was glorious. Warm, but with a cooling breeze. Birds, butterflies and insects buzzing around. Quiet and stunning view out across Melbourne. I had a quick moment to enjoy the view, but then it was time for business - down the face. I back-tracked slightly to a pad off the side of the track. Soon, it was time to go off the track. I zig-zagged down, regularly checking my phone (what, only 5 meters closer??) and had a few near slips. Finally, I reached the hash point. 100 meters off the path and 50 meters down. Took a few pics of the spot, turned around and contemplated the hill up. This wasn't a problem, as I always find up hill easier than down. Soon, I was back at the track and returned to the view point for another sit. The rest of the trip home was uneventful.
