I agree that 'graticule' is a little odd, since it refers to a fishing net -- so, the pattern all the latlong lines together make, not just one area bounded by them. But quadrangle is no good either, since that name implies a four-sided shape (by analogy to a triangle) but polar grats are three-sided. Sure, USGS calls the three-sides ones on other moons/planets (I think on Earth they stick to the U.S.) quadrangles anyway, but they are wrong in doing so. It may be a problem in search of a need, though, since 'graticule' has been firmly adopted. Graticules, quadrangles, or something else?

I agree that 'graticule' is a little odd, since it refers to a fishing net -- so, the pattern all the latlong lines together make, not just one area bounded by them. But quadrangle is no good either, since that name implies a four-sided shape (by analogy to a triangle) but polar grats are three-sided. Sure, USGS calls the three-sides ones on other moons/planets (I think on Earth they stick to the U.S.) quadrangles anyway, but they are wrong in doing so. It may be a problem in search of a need, though, since 'graticule' has been firmly adopted. -Arlo James Barnes (N35, W105) (talk) 02:10, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
