update: fire danger is too high. try again in six months maybe?
This is Arlo's origin geohash. Arlo plans to reach it on 2020-09-27. (Thanks to user:Fippe for kicking off the page; although I could have known of the coordinates since knowing about origin hashing [basically at the same time as learning about geohashing, nigh on a decade ago], I never really looked at the coordinates in detail until today.)
Okay, a month out I plan to call the Philmont Ranch to get permission to hike on their land. I am an experienced backpacker from a couple years in Americorps, and they have granted similar requests from others before, so I imagine it will mostly depend on what the fire situation is at that point (things have gotten bad at times in Northern New Mexico in the 21st century as relates to the fire cycle). This will be decisive: if they say no, I call it in favour of a displaced origin hash instead; if not, I add an ambassador achievement to my hash once complete. Assuming I am able to proceed, check off a list of things to bring (I guess reserving 1994-09-27_36_-105/tobring for that...most important will be a GPS-enabled device for nav and tracklogging and backup [phone for pictures?] and compass/map double backup), pack it in the car, and set off early on a full tank for Vegas and then Springer and then Rayado via NM 21, with a stop at the Christopher "Bloodlust" Carson museum to purchase a hashcard (should be open on a Sunday: https://philmontscoutranch.org/museums/hours#Kit-Carson-Museum-at-Rayado) and to respectfully visit the Abreu cemetery behind it (call ahead to see if this is OK also). Where 21 bends around Rayado, a dirt road sprouts to the west and runs nearly 5km to a turnaround where I might secure my vehicle. Then I take my pack with items and hike a kilometre to Zastrow camp and associated footbridge across Rayado Creek. From there I can follow the creek upstream past Rayado, Rimrock, Abreu and Old Abreu camps and the mergings of several tributary streams -- the trail parallels it. I should be able to see La Grulla lakebed by then across the gulch, and if I hit Fish Camp I've gone too far. The hashpoint will be about 200m from the trail, 300 from the creek. I must be careful not to go too far and cross onto UU Bar Ranch land; it would not cause a problem in the moment, but would void my 'no trespassing' goal. By this point I would be 10km from 21, which is why making plans is important -- that's 10km back into the country that help would need to hike to reach me, although not literally 'backcountry' (since there are amenities for boy scouts around). Then backtrack to my car and home with a pleasant stop at Miami Lake (where I accompanied my dad last year on a business drive).
My place of birth 26 years prior at the Holy Cross Medical Center would be about 40km due west from the hashpoint. I don't think I'll visit it this trip, too much driving and I'd be out of place.
