Expedition

The Plan

Off Alligator Drive. Take I-10 west, head to the Valdosta graticule first, then make our way south to this one. Plus it's by a beach, which... well, it's December, but it's still noteworthy.

The Geohashers

The Adventure

This graticule was pretty far away, don't get me wrong, but at this point we needed to get out of the apartment for a day. After a bit of a late start, we decided to nix the Valdosta part of the trip and make a beeline for Alligator Point. This turned out to be a better idea once Erica forgot her back support for the car.

We arrived in Alligator Point around 1:00 PM and parked at a nearby public beach access. The geohash was between the road and a sandy path that appeared to be used as a dog walking area. Both our GPSes had the same failure as last time where it wouldn't update the area (hers was frozen where we parked, mine assumed I was still airborne over the Atlantic) but then I had a realization. How is it going to tell me how to get home if it isn't updating? So I told it to plot a course for home... sure enough, the position started updating again! Rather pleased with myself, I got what I believe is the closest coordinates I've gotten in a long time.

On our way back to the car to grab our card, we ran into a hashdog, who was accompanied by two hashowners. Erica went to pet it, but given as I'm allergic and with no access to face-washing materials, I sadly had to pass up. We took the Queen of Spades to the beach access and stapled it to the walkway, followed by walking around the beach. Although that begs the question: how is it that when we go to the beach in May and August, but the beach is arguably at its best in December? If we had thought to bring swimsuits, we would've stayed longer.

Geoff earned the XKCD-100 Honorable Mention Achievement
by voyaging 217 miles to reach the (29, -84) geohash on 2012-12-16. Alas it was not a Saturday.
