Planning
Not much planning to speak of. As soon as I got up I checked the weekend's hashpoints, and found to my delight and surprise that two were accessible. Today's hashpoint was not only in the city limits, but apparently in some parking lot and only slightly out of my way. It had to be done.
Expedition
The hashpoint was very accessible, and, miraculously for Calgary, I could've even taken public transit, if it weren't for the fact that I was also grocery shopping. Besides, I didn't have 3 hours to waste waiting for Calgary busses. So, I hopped in the car and headed south.
The drive was pretty uneventful, other than the fact that I forgot sidewalk chalk the first time I left the house, so I had to turn back. It's been smoky in Calgary due to the forest fires in the neighbouring province of British Columbia, so the city looked quite gloomy on what would have otherwise been a sunny day. I had no problem finding my way to the geohash, and saw as I approached that indeed Google Maps was correct in suggesting that it fell near a church.
I parked in the church parking lot, then got out of the car with GPS, camera, and chalk in hand. I walked over to the end of the parking lot where Google Maps had indicated the hashpoint might be, and did the back and forth dance until my coordinates matched those I wrote down. I was a bit worried about anyone asking what I was doing in their church's parking lot with a GPS, but the one or two people who passed by didn't say anything. I attempted to take a clear picture of the GPS screen, and then had the pleasure of doing something entirely new for me: I marked the coordinates on the pavement in chalk. I took a few more pictures, including the requisite Stupid Grin (TM) and the church's sign, and was soon on my way. I bought cherries at the market to celebrate.
