The Expedition
TheOneRing
After the successful birthday geohashes in the last two years (graticules 46,9 and 51,12), I wanted to go on another attempt this year, too. The opportunity looked most promising in the Zürich graticule.
I started half past 8 in Bern, going by train to Gottmadingen via Zürich and Schaffhausen. Gottmadingen is already in Germany, between Thayngen (still CH) and Bietingen (D) the border is passed. Although nowadays it's a green line between both countries, custom officers wander through the trains. They left me alone this time, but I have some other experiences (harmless, but annoying).
From Gottmadingen it was 3.8km as the bird flies and 5km to walk. The weather was really nice and the autumnal landscape look impressive. In some distance I recognised a ruin and looking on a map afterwards, it was the fortress Hohentwiel. The Hohentwiel mountain is an extinct volcano. Then I passed Hilzingen.
I had to cross the village, and after walking up a hill I approached the geohash, lying next to a tree. I took the usual photographs and had a picnic, adequate to today, with some water, boiled egg and a cake (a bought one). I drank a bit and ate the egg but saved the cake for later. Finally, I walked back to Gottmadingen and took a train via Singen and Zürich back to Bern. After Schaffhausen when we passed the Rhine Falls, I took some more photos.
Very, very nice.
