Without a plan for the evening, I thought I had a good chance to get to this one and I messaged J to see if she would be interested in joining me after work. She thought it would be a good opportunity to meet up with her cousin, who lives down that way, after the geohash. I figured this would be a good chance for a Hash Collision event as well since it was in a public park, although I didn't put the cache details into my phone. It was just up the hill from the hash, but more on that later.
I'm writing this up late, so I don't remember exactly why we got a late start, but likely one of us got caught with a last minute chat at work that would just be a 'moment'. Regardless, we ended up leaving a little later that expected after J messaged her cousin to meet us at the bar around 19:00. As we got to Olean, he messaged us saying he was at the bar and J got a little nervous that we were going to be super late, but let him know we would still be about 20 min. Finding our way to the park, we found a spot to pull over right by the hash and hopped out. It was a simple thing to get a good reading on the HashDroid app and knowing we were short on time, we started looking for the Cache.
I knew the general direction it was in and how far away from the hash it was (45 feet, 12 meters) so I assumed it was around one of the giant trees nearby. Searching around, we came up empty so we expanded our search, but with the time crunch, we were just doing quick scans and ended up not finding anything. As mentioned earlier, I didn't save the coordinates of the cache either so I couldn't even get a more concentrated area to search. After a few more minutes of searching, we gave up and headed to Talty's Irish Pub for drinks.
The bathroom had a funny feature (see below) and when we were heading for home, I thought we were on the main road we came in on so I just continued out of town. After a few minutes, I told J that this didn't seem right but we now had bad signals outside the more residential area. Fortunately, we got enough of a signal that the phones were able to calculate a path, but it was no longer the way we drove in so it was a little out of the way.
