Expedition
My first expedition in 54,8! The Westerland graticule represented a gap in my grat map, so I'd wanted to hash in it for a while, but did not get the chance during the 9€ ticket phase last year. However, with the Deutschlandticket, I could finally make it, and a great opportunity presented itself on 28 May. The hash lay on a field beside a wind turbine under construction, 15 km from Heide.
I took the A3 to Elmshorn and then the regional train to Heide. Originally, I'd planned to cycle to the hash as the train line going past the hash to Büsum was currently out of service, but later noticed there was also a convenient bus service. So I cycled around the town centre, including its truly ginormous market square (apparently the largest in Germany), for a short while until I took the bus to Süderdeich, where I had to awkwardly share the space with a large children's buggy. From the bus station, it was only 1.3 km to the hashfield. Upon arriving, I immediately noticed the giant wind turbine towering over the field, around half-finished (I later found out that there'd already been a turbine here before, so I guess they probably built a bigger one).
Making my way to other side of the field across an overgrown heap of earth with a round concrete base (there'd been a turbine here too, which had apparently recently been demolished), I quickly reached the hash 6 m from the edge by walking between the rows of seedlings. After taking proof, I went back and cycled to the turbine. It was prohibited to enter the (currently empty) construction area, but I was able to get a good look at the giant metal rings and rotors lying about and wondered about how strong the brakes of the turbine would need to be in order to attach the second and third blades upright. An all-round amazing feat of construction.
After getting a good look at the wonderful dense flower meadow opposite the road, I cycled back to Heide – unfortunately, I did not have enough time to see the North Sea even though it was close. On the way, I saw a truly astounding number of wind turbines and also had a look at a big, interesting old engine displayed on the side of the street. I had a bit of time left, so I visited the town hall, the unconventional main church and a water tower, after which I had to race to the station due to bad time management. However, the train was, delayed, and its arrival time kept getting pushed back. It finally came after around half an hour, but ended its journey in Elmshorn after a hilarious multi-minute rambling message from the conductor. Doubly fortunately, I had to switch in Elmshorn and the delay had only used up my waiting time; the A3 back left a few minutes later.
