Expedition

Today's hash was at a place MagicIan had been before - a nice bit of grazing land (and bird spotters' paradise) near to the river not too far from where he lives. It was a lovely late afternoon - warm and sunny with a bit of a breeze - and he'd done all his jobs for the day so he took the opportunity to go for a very pleasant cycle. Before he set off, he let Sourcerer know he was intending to reach the hashpoint. The journey was completed without any trouble - as it was only a short distance MagicIan didn't bother taking a bag with extra food and clothing like normal so his load was considerably lighter which made a big difference on the hills. When he got there it took a while to work out how to gain access to the field containing the hashpoint. The most obvious entrance was blocked by a combination of a man in a car (who MagicIan thought could be Sourcerer, and who acknowledged my friendly wave and smile, but didn't get out so figured it couldn't have been him); and a herd of cows the other side of the gate. He carried on along, and into an adjacent field, but his way was blocked by ditches filled with water. So he headed all the way back to where he had parked his bike which turned out to be the best entrance after all. Being a RSPB protected area, MagicIan wasn't sure whether it counted as trespassing, but decided not to increase his risk of getting told off so had to wait a while for all the twitchers to leave him alone before venturing into the field. Once there, it was fairly straightforward to find the hashpoint as the field was full of shallow ditches which showed up as shadows on the Google Maps image. MagicIan stopped to leave a marker and take photos (including one of a Chinese deer who suddenly bolted across the field) and then went on his way.
