The geohash is on a field near Otzing, which is somewhat near Passau.

Who Went

The Plan

If successfull, this will be a remarkable one: I am on vacation in Austria at the moment. But this geohash in Germany looks most promising to get the birthday geohash. I will start in the late morning. Snow is forecasted and the route will take time. I am not able to give an ETA.

Keep fingers crossed.

The Expedition

EIGHT. IN. A. ROW

Alright, there it is: the eighth Birthday Geohash in a row. I was not sure whether I should go or not. Yesterday, there was snow falling and over night it was freezing. not the best conditions. But in the morning, there was no snow nor fog, so I decided in favour of going.

After breakfast, I packed a bag with my eTrex, camera, and mobile, but first I had to clean my car from snow. The layer of snow was about 10cm high. After that, I was ready to go. The streets and roads were in surprisingly good conditions, but to be honest, there was only snowy fields the first 20km. Thereafter, I was too low in altitude and fields were brownish-green.

I reached Germany without problems but encountered a message on my nevigation device, that there will be/might be a traffic jam on the autobahn ahead. Oh well, wait and see. Approaching the traffic jam, I was told a detour which I happily took. The traffic jam would have cost me approx. 15min.

Leaving the autobahn, there was just some kilometers left. The village I was heading to is called Otzing and I had to go parallel to railway lines to reach the even smaller village Haunsdorf. I parked my car approx. 200m from the geohash and started going when I saw construction work on an underbridge. I saw no workers so I took my chances and walked right through. On the other side, there were fields, already harvested and muddy, and 40m into one field, there was the geohash.

I took the usual photographs, stupid grin included. I went back and took a different way back along the autobahn to avoid the traffic jam once more. Back in the hotel, I had a small snack (with cake!) and took a swim.

What a wonderful birthday, what a wonderful geohash.
