I'm not sure what gave Benjw the gonads to change the main page image that no one has ever dared touch... but thanks!  I had recently looked them up and noticed they hadn't participated in a very long time.  Bright and sunny isn't a requirement for me, but having white-balance that looks like they're on our planet is nice. I've been trying to reduce the amount of text on the front page, which has become extremely wordy. So I put this text in place, which I thought accurately conveyed everything that needed to be said about "Saturday meetups":

This [new version of the text](https://geohashing.site/index.php?title=Saturday_meetup&type=revision&diff=836664&oldid=836647) is, IHMO, much too long for the front page. Is it ok if we shorten it again, and maybe move all that detail to a subpage?

(And again, IMHO, I do think the whole notion that geohashers might run any reasonable chance of randomly bumping into other people if they just turn up to the right location at 4PM on a Saturday is a complete fiction that may have been true in a couple of specific locations for a couple of months in 2008, but never since then. The much better way for people to meet up is to share their plans with each other and actually coordinate a time, any day of the week). : A subpage of some sort sounds like a good plan. I'll be honest, my first revision I had forgotten that this was transcluded rather than merely linked, and then I noticed the list of places the image was said by the wiki to have been used. While happenstance meetups aren't completely made up (see that thread in the community board with you and Fippe), they definitely represent a minority of meetups, and I agree the Saturday thing really has only historical value. Perhaps if we're rejiggering this, we could merge with meetup? (incidentally, talk:meetup is an amusing contribution to the discussion from the past). Anyway, I agree that 'this is what geohashing looks like' is an important job of the main page (the link to the hall of awesome helps this cause a lot too); others are 'what is geohashing?' (how it works and brief origins) and 'how to start'. Not much else needs to be said I'd think, but perhaps I'm wrong. Arlo (talk) 15:06, 18 April 2022 (UTC)

Saturday vs. Sunday

Has anyone else noticed whether Sunday is (becoming) more popular than Saturday, for geohashing in general or meetups in particular?

I don't know, and I'm not sure there's enough data to compute. In my graticule we have so few usable geohashes (two this month so far) that we take whatever we can get. It might be possible for someone to run a program on the database, if it's possible to find all the Expeditions and parse the dates. -Robyn 17:24, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
