Expedition

I initially thought I'd have to go here in the morning because I'd be in Hamburg all day, but the bus did not depart conveniently (there's one every two hours) and I went to bed too late, so I scrapped that idea. When my evening plans got cancelled the next day, I figured I could make it before going to table tennis training in the evening, but it rained heavily (more accurately: it was pouring buckets), so I decided against it and resolved to go after practice, taking the bus on the way there. However, shortly before I wanted to depart for the bus, I noticed that, in fact, it stops arriving after 7 pm. Reaffirming my commitment to Geohashing and not wanting to pass up the opportunity of using the long daylight to the fullest at least once around summer solstice (the sun only set shortly before 10 pm), I reluctantly decided to cycle both ways and departed at around 9:35 pm.

Cycling the 12.8 km to Nahe, I got to see a nice sunset while listening to Steven Pinker's Rationality. I passed several deer standing very close to the road or path, but only managed tho photograph one which stood some distance away. Arriving at the hashfield, I noticed a car right next to the entry to the field. I hid my bike out of sight and scrambled along the edge, and soon heard the voices of two women approaching the car, who apparently noticed my bike (they must've gone looking), and one kept staring at a device in her hand. I wondered why they would park right here, in the middle of nowhere, and considered the possibility that they were hashers too (very unlikely). But I didn't find out because they drove off a while later.

The hash lay on a field of almost full-grown wheat, and I had to cross a few metres of crops to get to a tractor track, trying my best to always find empty patches onto which I could step. After 220 m, I found the coordinates 8 m from a track and took some pictures with Norma. Despite it being twenty past ten, it was still light – hooray for being among the 2% of the world's population living at the most extreme latitudes. I struggled back to my bike, drenching my trousers, shoes, and socks due to the very wet grain.

I opted for a different way back, and it slowly turned dark. Shortly after departing, a came past another abandoned barn (just like two and five weeks ago), though this one was more of a shelter, and its roof was mostly missing. I heard some strange animal sounds while looking around, but couldn't see anything when I looked where I thought they came from. My bike got dirty as I cycled along the non-asphalted, winding Düvelsbarg, but I eventually made it home a little after 11 pm.
