From Geohashing

Coordinates

I see some discrepancies between the shotgun coordinates and the ones the peroon map shows using the Meetup_graticule template. And it kind of surprised me since it doesn't happens in the other retro hash I did (which is not so old).

I finally found out what happens. According to shotgun and some .csv file I downloaded from somewhere in the wiki (but now I cannot remember from ¿^^) called "allcordsW30.csv" the value of the DJIA for 1950-08-23 was 220.21, which concatenated with the date: "1950-08-23-220.21" gives the coordinates I searched for: "0.2472169414370836 0.9178578869833560" and that shotgun shows.

However, the geo.crox.net data shows 219.79 (for 1950-08-23), which is, according to shotgun and the .csv file the DJIA data for 1950-08-24... One day off. And "1950-08-23-219.79" gives the point shown in the map.

Is this a known issue I didn't find in any talk page on the wiki?

Was I blinded by science? --SastRe.O (talk) 14:25, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

I too noticed that unfortunately the Shotgun implementation does not always show correct coordinates for retrohashes. data.geohashing.info also has 219.79 for 1950-08-23. Maybe the file allcordsW30.csv just subtracted a day from every date, even if the date was before 2008-05-26 (when the W30 rule came into effect), maybe that is why Shotgun has these mistakes.
I think this is a case of being blinded by science HOWEVER your report makes the expedition sound like a lot of fun, you should not let the fun be taken away from you because of this. --Fippe (talk) 15:27, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the answers! I compared some data of "data.geohashing.info", and I believe before 1960-01-01 the data in shotgun is different from geohashing.info (can not confirm but manual tests give that impression) by that offset of 1 day I suspected. Some days are correct, but only because for Saturday, Sunday and Monday the same DJIA value is used (and other DJIA holidays), and since the offset is of 1 day, the same coordinates are given.
Nonetheless, the fun was still there, that won't be spoiled ;) --SastRe.O (talk) 16:39, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
I did some calculations with the old data, and I think you walked right through 1956-10-22 54 13, at least your tracklog shows that. Shotgun does not show it. You might want to move the page there. --Fippe (talk) 18:00, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
Wow, that's great! Thanks for looking into it :D I moved the page and found a compromising solution to all this chaos. Look, it ended being a more fun expedition than expected ^^ --SastRe.O (talk) 18:57, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

Alternate location

On the other hand, I see some expeditions which show a blue pin with an alternate location. How can this be done? I saw nothing on the Template and it is commented on Expedition but I see no example... --SastRe.O (talk) 14:25, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

The blue pins are a feature of the peeron map. For future hashes, you can create one by selecting the red (normal) marker and dragging it to the desired destination. It turns green then. You then click on the marker and click on "submit this location", and the marker then turns blue.
This is not possible for retrohashes, because they are in the past, and early geohashers decided that an alternate location must be decided ahead of time and democratically. Theoretically there can be several alternate meetup markers, and people can vote for them through the peeron map, and only the one with the most votes is the official blue alternate meetup. --Fippe (talk) 15:27, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
Got it, I was just curious --SastRe.O (talk) 16:38, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
