Location

on a path with a nice view on the castle Lichtenberg

Participants

  • Gefrierbrand
  • Santu
  • Pedro the dog
  • an unknown nice Lady with another dog a few dozen meters ahead of us.

Plans

We noticed that the hashlocation was very near to a trail we had wandered along before near Lichtenberg and decided it was time for a No Batteries achievement. We carefully compared different aerial pictures and looked for noticeable landmarks to be able to get as close tho the point as possible. We identiefied a few key intersetions and printed the maps. Due to the bad and very rainy weather we had to wrap them in clear plastic sheets.

Expedition

Santu had been in the area before and knew how to get to Lichtenberg by heart. We therefore only had to remember which direction we needed to take for a few intersections and could then refer to de detailed printouts once we got near to the point. An older lady walked a few dozen meters in front of us with her dog, noticed us and turned around to ask us about our dog pedro from a distance. We later realized she must have been exactly on the hashpoint by coincidence as she (loudly) spoke to us.

As we entered the general area it became clear that finding the precise location would be harder than we had anticipated because the terrain limited visibility to the intersections we intended to use as reference. The path we were on was also differently layed out in several available aerial maps, one suggesting that the hashppoint was slightly south of the trail while another pointed north. We split the difference and stayed on the trail, but wandered east and west around the presumed location just to be sure to have at least crossed the point before looking on the GPS. We then judged the rough distances to the next discernible landmarks and positioned us accordingly. After declaring that we now think we are there, we opened the geohashdroid app and were very pleased, that the GPS uncertainty was just barely big enough for us to still be able to claim the point as reached.

As we knew the weather would be bad and very rainy, we dressed accordingly and stayed moslty warm and dry underneeth our clothes. We also were anything but miserable so we can't claim the drowned rat achievement for this one.
