Plans

I was busy during the day, so I decided to try a sunrise geohash. Sunrise is at 7:56. I planned to take the S11 from Karlsruhe Marktplatz at 6:30, which arrives in Spielberg at 7:09. 2009-08-11 48 8 is nearby, so I also planned to revisit it.

Report

Sunrise geohashing - it means getting up early, 5:00, in my case. After some coffee, I left my home at 6:15, took the S2 to Karlsruhe Marktplatz, from there the 6:30 S11 to Spielberg.

There I arrived at 7:12. Even though it was over half an hour later and the horizon in the east was starting to brighten up, it was darker than the brightly lit inner city.

As I had plenty of time until official sunrise time (7:56), I decided to revisit my old Spielberg hashpoint first. I arrived there at 7:27, locating it was as easy as the first time, regardless the dark.

However the only distinct object one could recognize, was the tall hash tree, which I photographed. Otherwise, not much could be seen. The field was harvested and, of course, the marker was gone. I didn't expect my crappy paper markers to survive very long.

Instead of walking back to Spielberg, I continued walking to the actual hashpoint. I walked down to a road, since I had to cross the rail line in some way, and the road had to have a bridge or a crossing of some sort. And there was a railway crossing. From there, it was a matter of minutes to find the hashpoint.

It was located in a grass field, a few meters from the S11 rail line, as it was peak hour, several trains went by, while I wrote the marker and waited for the official sunrise time.

At 7:56, the sun was probably rising, unfortunately it was blocked by clouds. I stayed there until about 8:05, taking photos of the rising sun, the occasionally passing trains and the fog crawling above the ground down in the valley.

By 8:16, I was back in Spielberg and took an express S11 train back to Karlsruhe, where I arrived at 9:00.
