Like the previous years, I wanted to celebrate my birthday in a quite specific way: to go geohashing. But first there were choices to make: the geohash in which graticule looks most promising and how to get there. Last years, the decisions were quite similar (graticules 46,9, 51,12, and 47,8). Consequently, I visited four different graticules on four different birthdays.
I decided in favour of Kempten-graticule, because the geohash looked good and I haven't been geohashing there yet.
I took a day off to be more independent and not to rely on finishing work extra early. I started quarter past nine and went by car to Markt Rettenbach. The term "Markt" represents a market town in Bavaria, Austria, and South Tyrol, and simply says that this town had municipal character, but did not have the size of a city nor a city wall. It is a step between a village and a city.
I arrived around quarter to eleven and parked at a cemetary. I didn't know the town and possible parking lots so this was safest way to park. From the car it was about 2.1km as the bird flies and I started to walk.
It must be uncommon nowadays to see someone walking because after a while a car stopped beside me and the driver asked me, if he should bring me somewhere. I was puzzled and said "No, but thank you" and went on.
With 700m to go, I could see part of the forest where the geohash was, and here the fun part started: in contradiction to last time I was clever and brought some plastic bags to cover my shoes. From the map I selected a forest road which I spotted quickly. After a while the forest track led to a meadow and I decided to cover my shoes. I crossed the meadow but had to stop abruptly when I came to a rivulet. Unfortunately, it was too broad to jump over and I was too sissy to go through. So, I looked for a narrower part and walked alongside, still in direction of the geohash.
With only 130m to the geohash I was getting more and more desperate because I didn't want to have a failure - not today -, when I saw a small footbridge. I guess children are playing in the forest and either they or their parents build it. Of course I took the opportunity, crossed the rivulet and continued my way through another part of the forest.
Without further challenges I reached the geohash and took the usual photographs. The place was not very special, trees all around. Through my way back through Markt Rettenbach, I was looking for a restaurant to have lunch, but I wasn't very taken with the menu of the only one I found.
Consequently, I went back to my car and there I had a small picnic with a boiled egg. Later that day back at home, there was also some cake as it should be and even later there was mulled wine on a Christmas market in Munich.
Just three words: Fantastic. Absolut fantastic.
