Hi Thomcat, it's Quaternary here. I am over in Seattle for a wedding this weekend, and it looks like there is a hash tomorrow (2018-08-18 47 -122) in case you want to meet up. With the wedding, it would be most practical for me to meet sometime late morning, so there is time to get there, and then time to get home again (we're staying in Madrona). We caught the train in from the airport last night, so I'm guessing it'd be pretty straightforward to retrace our steps back out there on the same train, and then either bus or Uber to Tacoma. Hey Thom -- thanks very much for the ribbon, but I don't like to claim part-achievements for myself (eg partway to minesweeper or centurion) so I will take it off my homepage.  You can still keep me on the Globetrotter achievement page, though! Yes, I've been to Europe once in 2015, and hit two geohash points. Now I'll be back and teaching a class (Logic Academy Days) on Thursday 18 June (in Eindhoven), then Tuesday 23 June (in Hannover), then Thursday 25 June (in Munchen). Spending the weekend in and around Amsterdam (the Hague is not out of the question); spending Friday after the class visiting Neuschwanstein. Will be watching the Geohash points, of course, and wouldn't mind meeting up in the Netherlands or greater Germany. Until then, catch me on IRC around the time the hash points are announced. --Thomcat (talk) 10:15, 8 May 2015 (EDT)
What if I pick you up from the airport and we go straight to the Santa Rosa point?

Wear long pants - off road in that area's going to be stickery.

If you kick in for gas, we could hit the Antioch point afterwards, but I bet we're too fried.

There's been a bit more activity here, would you be willing to do planned expo pages for these?

:I see the Daly City connection, but I am flying in to the San Jose airport, arriving 2:05 pm. Looks like if I am on time and hustle, I can make it to the Daly City Bart station by 4:44 pm. Sunset tomorrow is 5:27 pm - would have to make that long pants and a flashlight. Better option would be another San Jose hasher who wants to make the drive - will advertise. --Thomcat 10:05, 26 January 2013 (EST)

When I plugged the charger transformer into the German outlet (via adapter) and then into the GPS, I heard a Pfzzt. I cannot tell whether the damage is permanent, but the device refuses to power on. Thus, unless the geohash gods further bless me with a geohash close to me AND easily locatable with only a map (Danatar style), I believe my German Geohashing days are done. --Thomcat 12:15, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

If I depart Frankfurt (Messe or Hbf) at 9:06, I transfer at Weinheim (Bergstr) and arrive at Käfertal Wald at 10:33. The next later option for that same station is 12:03. Just get yourself a Niedersachsenticket and there will be something reachable somewhere. If in doubt, stop by at the IRC channel and ask for directions. Hey Thomcat,

Hi Thomcat, thanks for your message. For us germans distances like those between Niedersachsen and Bavaria are quite far ;-) But aniway, your suggestion of a meetup on a weekend is promising and to visit one of the "northern" graticules (seen from my homegraticule 49 11 Nürnberg) e. g. 50 9 (Fulda), 50 10 (Erfurt) or 50 11 (Gotha) by train should be possible. So, if you could manage to travel south to one of these graticules, i would be ready for a meetup on a weekend. I´ve discussed that already with dawidi and he also agreed in such a meetup. --Tomcat 19:29, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
+
Hijackal has resurrected the meetup graph, as you may have noticed. This led to a bit of discussion about the rules. In the end we decided that you have to meet each other at a geohash or during a geohashing expedition. It doesn't have to be the first time you meet, but you have to meet while actually hashing.
: It's a bit of a stretch (6.5 hours by train one way for us, haven't even looked at the return trip yet) but what about 2009-02-22 51 10, on sunday, in a rural area north of Erfurt, in one of Germany's few remaining virgin graticules? (I'm not sure yet that I can, or want to go, it's just a thought) --dawidi 15:01, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

::Quite a stretch (5.8 hours here) but it would be nice to have a meetup in that one virgin graticule. I'm considering. If we can fill a car, that's ~3 hours at a justifiable cost. -- relet 15:51, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

::I wouldn't mind at all how long I'm on the train, but I could only be there for about one and a half hour at a very specific time. Guess noone else would do exactly that trip and share the ticket. :( --Ekorren 15:59, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

::I may come, too, if the group is large enough. It's less than 4 hours for me (Würzburg-Schweinfurt-Erfurt-hashpoint) and I could share a ticket with Ekorren, or even with dawidi from Schweinfurt - Danatar 16:57, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Glad to see you made it out!  If you want to avoid the "whoops, forgot to check the website for other expeditions" issue in the future, you should go into your preferences on the wiki and set it so that it emails you when someone modifies a page on your "watchlist", and then add the Seattle page to said watchlist (by clicking "watch" at top.)  That way, if someone posts on either the Seattle talk-page or the Seattle main page (almost always expedition planning) you'll get bugged about it.  It took me a while to figure that out...  -- OtherJack 03:31, 5 July 2012 (EDT)

Right, that's settled. Which graticule is it gonna be then? And what time? And are you going to wear your Star Trek outfit? ;) - Mampfred (talk) 06:55, 22 February 2014 (EST)
Outfit is just a t-shirt, but yes I will wear it. --Thomcat (talk) 16:36, 22 February 2014 (EST)

If I depart Frankfurt (Messe or Hbf) at 9:06, I transfer at Weinheim (Bergstr) and arrive at Käfertal Wald at 10:33. The next later option for that same station is 12:03. I depart from this same station for Nürnberg Hbf at 11:23, 11:53, 12:23, 12:53, 1:23, 1:53, etc. as is appropriate. Further discussion on the meetup page.

Hey Thomcat, I'm unfortunately busy on Sunday, otherwise I'd be down. Let me know if you are out my way in the future. --CBos (talk) 1519 (PDT), 18 July 2014

Thanks for the invite. It's an interesting location; I didn't think it was very doable at first but on closer look see that it probably is. But it's a seven-hour drive from the City of Roses, so, although technically possible... not this time, I don't think. Bon chance! Michael5000 (talk) 23:12, 25 September 2015 (EDT)

Meetup graph update

Hey Thomcat,

Hijackal has resurrected the meetup graph, as you may have noticed. This led to a bit of discussion about the rules. In the end we decided that you have to meet each other at a geohash or during a geohashing expedition. It doesn't have to be the first time you meet, but you have to meet while actually hashing.

As your meetups with me and the other Europeans in Utrecht and The Hague did not include any hashes, we had to remove those connections. Hope you don't mind. --CO2 (talk) 10:38, 21 November 2015 (EST)

Absolutely fine - just emphasizes the need to geohash with you the next time we meet :) --Thomcat (talk) 12:37, 21 November 2015 (EST)

Requesting your thoughts on an update to the Algorithm

Hey Thomcat, Sourcerer recently threw out an idea to update the algorithm and there's some serious debate going on to discuss options. I wanted to directly reach out to you as you are still somewhat active and have done a lot of hashing in the past. It would be good to have your thoughts and comments here. A Late Answer

Hey Thomcat, in August 2008, you reminded me of providing the 2008-07-30 53 8 story (see here). Okay, I'm done now! ;-) --Alaska (talk) 17:57, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Indeed, awesome! As an active wiki editor, I was trying to tie up all the loose ends. Welcome to the knot! --Thomcat (talk) 16:04, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

What happened here? From the pictures I'm assuming Mother Nature, but you never know. --Fippe (talk) 21:33, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
