Geohashing is VERY addicting. It hasn't even been a week since my first hash! I think I found myself a new, fun hobby.
Have fun hashing! - Bdaughe5 05:46, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
I wonder what can be done to reduce the recalcitrance of your nephlage (that's a collective noun I made up myself to denote any combination of nieces and nephews). -Robyn 21:41, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
- I was successful in getting my nephew to go geocaching with me, but he's 7, and I think it was mostly fun to do something with his uncle. Jiml 00:45, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
- Niece#1 has since come along without complaint on one expedition, on 2009-11-27. Niece#3 could have come along on 2009-12-27, but she was being a teenage slugabed. Michael5000 03:21, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
To Cinnamon Bear
Hello Mr. Bear.
We will be visiting your graticule(s) in September (some time between Sep 10 and 15). We would be happy to meet up with you. -- relet and lyx 14:07, 3 August 2011 (EDT)
- The Bear is always pleased to meet fellow adventurers. Michael5000 17:14, 3 August 2011 (EDT)
ArchTyp*?
Did you want archetypal or archetypical? Jiml 14:35, 17 September 2011 (EDT)
- That's a rough draft. It will be several days before I get the current spree fully written up. Michael5000 00:00, 18 September 2011 (EDT)
Glad to see
Glad to see you made it out to this corner yesterday. Sorry I wasn't there. kydlt
G.J. Thanksgiving
Cool, there aren't any other people geohashing in the area (or the whole western slope for that matter) I'll definitely try to make an expedition. Though I'm mostly limited to in and around GJ Messyhair42
RocketMac's Launch
Thank you! Considering the source, that is quite a compliment! RocketMac 16:09, 14 October 2011 (EDT)
PS. When I came to your discussion page, I found the bit about the four tildes. Cool tip!
Endurance? Wow!
I had totally missed your achievement and just came across it in the Hall of Amazingness. Wow! Congraticulations are in order! I kind of noticed you hashing a lot, but didn't realize what you were up to. :D You beat me to it, you sneaky bastard! ;) -- relet 15:49, 10 February 2012 (EST)
- It snuck up on me too. I didn't really plan to organize my trip around geohashing, but the hashpoints just kept lining up and after a while, I had been out for seven days! Michael5000 10:42, 16 February 2012 (EST)
- Did you guys sleep in your truck? How'd that work out? -- relet 06:10, 28 March 2012 (EDT)
Thanks man
I just realized that my pages weren't automatically watched when I created them so I've missed some of your very nice comments. But thank you for the encouraging words, I'll keep up the good work in my struggle for crazy multi hashes mid-winter. Take care! --Cjk 17:46, 19 February 2012 (EST)

On finishing your running box. On ipad, so very brief. --kydlt

Geohashing Day
Hale fellow Washington explorer! We are celebrating Geohashing Day and Towel Day this weekend - 2013-05-25 47 -122 - interested in joining us? --Thomcat (talk) 14:57, 24 May 2013 (EDT)
Too bad I missed you.
Sorry I missed you when you hit Boise (even though we both made it to the same 2 hashpoints). If you're passing through this way again, put a note on the Boise, Idaho graticule page and a meetup of some sort can be attempted. I'm curious if you saw the geohash posters I hung near either of your Boise hashes?
And if you were continuing down I-84 after Boise, I hope you noticed that 42,-114 was near the interstate and very probably reachable on the 4th. --Eldin (talk) 02:52, 6 August 2013 (EDT)
- Hi Eldin -- I thought it was fun asynchronously hashing with you. It's always hard for me when traveling to figure out when I'm going to get somewhere -- I drove 300 miles to get to the Eagle site, for instance, and wasn't sure I would get there until I got there. Well, in truth I find it hard to predict when I'll get somewhere on my home turf, too. In 126 expeditions (as of yesterday), I've never actually "met up" with someone, although I've found or left evidence a dozen or so times. I DIDN'T see posters, which is odd, since I was looking for evidence both times. Was your poster on the street side on Sunday; I stayed on the parking lot side there.
- I looked pretty hard at 2013-08-04 42 -114, but there's a line around the area marking a change of vegetation. That says "animal pen with a barbed-wire fence" to me, so I gave it a miss.
- It's nice to see you burning up the Boise graticule. I was off geohashing for a year, but have been enjoying my return to the game for the last few months. Maybe I'll bump into you at some random point down the road. Michael5000 (talk) 09:17, 6 August 2013 (EDT)
- At Saturday's site, the poster was impaled on a twig stuck into a fencepost near the hash. The wind wanted to blow it around to be facing upward/away from the street. If you look at the picture of Ojones and family you can see the poster just to the right of them. At Sunday's site I brought thumbtacks to be able to post it more firmly, but the nearest place I could find to tack it up without trampling plants was the phone pole beside the exit from the parking lot (visible from the hashpoint, but not super obvious). So I'm not terribly surprised that you missed either of them. And I'll be passing through Portland, and then staying a week in Netarts (McMinnville, Oregon graticule, on the coast) at the beginning of September, so perhaps I'll run into you or another Portland area geohasher on that trip. --Eldin (talk) 19:07, 6 August 2013 (EDT)
You need a 2014 section!
Just noticed that your most recent, 2014 hash, is still listed under the 2013 headline. I hope you're planning on making your 2014 hashing stint more than just the tail end of your 2013 section! :) Cheers! zhukant (talk) 03:44, 21 February 2014 (EST)
- I'm flattered that you looked hard enough to notice. In winter, I tend to wait until four or five expeditions have piled up before I update the personal pages. But then, I didn't know anyone was watching! Michael5000 (talk) 16:34, 22 February 2014 (EST)
- There ya go. Michael5000 (talk) 01:18, 23 February 2014 (EST)
- Awesome! :) I noticed that you said you don't normally follow plans on the 22 page - are you usually hard to get a hold of? -zhukant (talk) 01:35, 23 February 2014 (EST)
- Naw, it's just that I need to schedule the expedition around my day, not the day around my expedition, so trying to hit a designated meet-up time isn't usually realistic.

"As I was heading back to the truck, I encountered every urban geohasher's worst nightmare: an aggressive, charging, off-leash dog. Fortunately, it was only about the size of a large burrito." (2014-03-26_45_-122)
My family and I laughed out loud at this one. I have taken the liberty of adding it to the geohash-quotes list and it might pop up on the main page once in a while.

Lewiston - Sept 26 2015
Hi Michael5000 - very likely to make a try for the Lewiston, Idaho hashpoint on Saturday early afternoon. I've seen that you get over that direction sometimes. Any inclination to join me? --Thomcat (talk) 15:19, 25 September 2015 (EDT)

Requesting your thoughts on an update to the Algorithm
Hi Michael5000, Sourcerer recently threw out an idea to update the algorithm and there's some serious debate going on to discuss options. I wanted to directly reach out to you as have done a lot of hashing in the past. Not sure if you are active anymore or how often you visit the site, but it would be good to have your thoughts and comments here if you are still around. Any update on these expeditions? Did you really do four in one day? --Fippe (talk) 06:31, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hmm nooo..... Not on THAT day, anyway. I didn't do any on that day. Michael5000 (talk) 03:01, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
45, -121
Howdy! Strongly considering 2023-05-06_45_-121 tomorrow morning. It's just north of North Bonneville. I'll probably follow up with another in 2023-05-06_45_-120 (you show as 0-1), with my eventual destination Prosser WA. With success, this would add two graticule successes for me, one for you. Interested? --Thomcat (talk) 15:14, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Thomcat -- just twigged to the symbol showing me that there was a message here. I didn't go for the Gorge possibilities, but it looks like we did both hit the gritty one in Chehalis. I was a little blown away to see that there was already a page started -- been a long time since that happened.... Michael5000 (talk) 18:34, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
2023-05-21 45,-122 Geohash
Hi Michael! I know it's been a while since I geohashed, life is just busy now that high school graduation is coming up in a few weeks. Anyway, I noticed that the geohash for today's 45, -122 graticule was quite interesting -- in the middle of a PDX runway! It looks to be right in the middle of the 10R-28L runway according to OSM. For obvious reasons, I couldn't make it out there today. My dad joked about grabbing a pair of bull cutters, but that's probably a bad idea. I just thought you'd enjoy this unusual geohash if you hadn't already seen it considering you are a fellow portlander. Happy geohashing! Hamblingreen (talk) 03:56, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
- Ha! I saw that one too! I fantasized about seeing if I could book a flight to somewhere that might use the south runway, but cooler heads prevailed. Congrats on your graduation, that's very exciting! Will you be in a new graticule come fall? Michael5000 (talk) 03:54, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- That's hilarious, I thought of the same exact thing! I will be in a new graticule this fall, attending BYU Idaho in Rexburg. It's in the 43, -111 graticule, a bit farther south and much farther east than I'm used to. But I'll be back in my home graticule in the spring. Hamblingreen (talk) 05:29, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- I've been through Rexburg but don't have a memory of it. But it's an unhashed graticule, as are six of the eight surrounding ones -- the area clearly needs a geohashing pioneer! ...secondary to diligent application to one's studies, of course! ; )
