From Geohashing

Welcome to the Geohashing Community! --Fippe (talk) 10:29, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks! I'm excited to go on my first expedition in the near future. It seems i'm not the only active geohasher in my home graticule of 45 -122. --Hamblingreen 4:54, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

Yes, Portland is one of the most active graticules. You have Jiml, Michael5000 & Mrs.5000 and Frogman there. --Fippe (talk) 10:32, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

I still havent found a good hashpoint yet, not one close enough to my house to reasonably get there. i also need to order a gps device that i can take pictures with both proof and a goofy grin. my origin geohash, the one from the date of my birth, is about 20 minutes away by car but i've asked to borrow my parent's car and they said no :/ Hamblingreen (talk) 17:42, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

I would not worry too much about ordering a dedicated GPS receiver, unless you were going to get one anyway. What I usually do for proof is to take a screenshot in the fantastic Geohash Droid app, like this. That one only works on Android though, but BrendanTWhite is currently developing an iOS app. What I have seen iOS users do is to take a screenshot in Google Maps with the current location and the destination on top of each other, like this. --Fippe (talk) 18:15, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

i'll be geohashing with my Pinephone, a mobile linux device. so i have access to desktop geohashing apps and stuff, just not android or ios ones. i think i read about an achivement somewhere where you get to a hashpoint using only FOSS, i guess i'll be doing that every time :P -Hamblingreen (talk) 06:42, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

jeez i'm having such a hard time figuring out editing on here. a learning experience i suppose. i just hope i don't mess everything up too much. i had a blast on my first expedition today even though it didn't go as planned Hamblingreen (talk) 03:32, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

  • You had a little bit of trouble because we were trying to edit the front page at the same time -- that won't happen very often. You are doing great with the wiki code!

I did my first several expeditions with printed maps, which works fine if you are a confident map reader. But using a GPS or the Droid app is very satisfying. Michael5000 (talk) 03:55, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Ugh, today's hash would have been perfect but I was just too busy to get there. It was out in gresham about 25 minutes away right in the middle of a residential street, perfect for the speed racer achievement. Oh, well, perhaps another day :( Hamblingreen (talk) 04:25, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Just read your report for 2022-10-14 45 -123 in the forest, and I am glad you survived despite the thorns, nettles and the lack of sunscreen :D
I was going to read the report for 2022-10-14 45 -122 in the city, but currently the page is an identical copy of the forest expedition. Was that by accident? --Fippe (talk) 14:58, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

  • Yup, i haven't quite finished writing up my second hash of the day, i accidentally put the same content on both pages and will go fix it once i finsh writing about my speed-racer hash :) --Hamblingreen (talk) 05:59, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
  • That second part is up, and i also updated my user page and added myself to lots of winner lists for achievement pages. geohashing is such a great way to have adventures -- Hamblingreen (talk) 08:26, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
Nice, I'm glad you like it. I also like that you and your dad though your mom would not notice that something is going on :D --Fippe (talk) 18:51, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Ugh, today's geohash is shockingly close, just at the edge of my neighborhood. Too bad I only just checked now and my parents won't let me take the car ~6 miles to the hash :( --Hamblingreen (talk) 04:36, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

I'd love to drive to today's 45 -123 geohash along Hwy 12 in Washington, but my dad went for a run and it was either his adventure or mine this evening. Hamblingreen (talk) 01:49, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

No way! For the first time since arriving in Rexburg, Idaho a geohash is close enough to walk to! A mere 0.4 miles from my apartment, the 2023-09-30 43 -111 geohash appears to be in an empty lot behind the grocery store nearby. Hooray!! Why not go for the Midnight geohash achievement? I think I'll do that. I'll get the walking geohash, virgin graticule, and midnight geohash achievement that way. This is so awesome! Hamblingreen (talk) 23:46, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Oh my goodness, I made it. The first of many successful geohashes in the Rexburg graticule to come! Hamblingreen (talk) 07:28, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
