Expedition

We woke up in Dover, Delaware, at the end of a week on the East Coast, with a late afternoon flight out of Newark, which is a few hours to the north. We saw that this hashpoint wasn't too far off of the route, so at some point we turned off Highway 1 and surrendered ourselves to the mechanical voice of my phone navigation app. It took us through a classic New Jersey landscape of villages, country, farms, scattered houses, preposterous new mansions, commercial strips, malls, heavy industry, and titanic distribution centers, all strewn randomly over the land as if the president of the zoning board was Jackson Pollack. I always find it kind of charming, although I think it would be challenging to live there.

The hashpoint was in a nice little suburban neighborhood in search of a city called "Presidential Estates" or something like that. The streets were named after US Presidents. For instance, the hashpoint was on the sidewalk of Eisenhower Street, near Truman Street. People were out walking their dogs and taking the air, and didn't glance twice at us.

Then we continued on to the airport. Our flight out was on the runway for three hours waiting for weather clearance before taking off for the 5 1/2 hour flight to Portland. It was a long time to sit in an airplane.

Arbitrary Travel Sidebar: Michael ran in his 34th (NY) and 35th (Del) states on this trip, and completed his county collection for Delaware and New Jersey. Mrs. completed Delaware.
