Talk:Meetup graph
Awesome! Now we can play "The Six Degrees of Geohashers"! --Meghan 22:45, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
- Seems the longest shortest path that actually does connect is 5 connections at the moment, with either Nick_mz or Ilpadre at the one and warren at the other end. I'm proud to be part of it ;) Nice work! --Ekorren 10:39, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- Looks like Thomcat is the Erdős of geohashing. My Thomcat number is 2. --Ilpadre 11:08, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- My Thomcat number is also 2! But my Ilpadre number is 4. This will have to change. Clearly I should come live in Germany for the next 8 months. Thepiguy 03:28, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
- Drats; my Thomcat number is infinite. (My Erdős number is 3.) --starbird 12:44, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Cool! Thomcat and I are hubs! thepiguy is going to Germany, so it looks like eastern Australia is my best bet for connecting up the graph. -Robyn 22:51, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
- Give me one month and I will supremely mess up this graph! Also, this is amazing! Thepiguy 06:30, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- Geohashers, heed the call. If an out-of-towner posts "hey, I'd like to meet you guys" - do it!
- Seriously, this is way cool stuff. --Thomcat 13:49, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- LOL at Thepiguy supremely messing up the graph! it's only going to get more awesome next week when you meet us South of England geohashers! I actually can't wait to see how Koepfel will draw that! -- sermoa 20:19, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Also:
- Adrian and Twilightcity met
- Holly, DaleF and Jaem met each other
- Kelsey met thepiguy and MylSh
- Warren and Garyuuko are the same person
- Kelsey and Galaxstart are also one and the same
Damn, I have to go meet some more geohashers.
- Robyn's meetups added, will upload new version tomorrow (or more like today in my timezone) Also, the single nodes (users without meetups) will be taken out. The graph (the version on my computer) now covers 75 users and 100 meetups. Koepfel talk 23:39, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
Very interesting. Reminded me of http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b47/ilpadre/Adolescentromanticnetwork_reviseda.jpg ;) --Ilpadre 05:54, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- Woah! That's crazy, ilpadre... I wouldn't even BE on such a graph...-- UnwiseOwl
- Well, I thought more about this when creating the graph. But the Jefferson High graph is fascinating, too. Koepfel talk 15:25, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Dammit Kate, why coudln't you have waited just 15 minutes! -- UnwiseOwl
- Was in Penola last week, but nothing came up. Drat. Am going to be in Adelaide this weekend too- Friday night to Monday morning. Am keen but don't know if I'll have internet connection. I'll message you my number, and if something looks good- could you let me know? --60.242.202.70 05:39, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Automatic
This would be the perfect thing for a small amount of scripting, which would automatically build this graph... --TheJosh 04:54, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- We could just input the information in the more-or-less human readable dot format. -- relet 08:23, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- Building the actual graph is not that hard, the hard part is extracting the data from various user and expedition pages. And I don't see how that could be done by a script. Koepfel talk 15:25, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, because if you just looked for user names in expeditions you would get me commemorating Meghan, mentioning relet, and being reminded of bears by Juventas. Also even if everyone mentioned on the page arrived, you have to read intelligently to tell if they were present simultaneously. You could however, ask participating geohashers to maintain a "Geohashers Met" section and be sure to include only names of people they have met, i.e. if they want to list "almost met" people, put them in another section. -Robyn 15:50, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Setting Out Together
How about the less interesting relationship: geohashers who set out with each other, even if they didn't meet any other people there. For example, my and YawnWithExcitement's trip to Ayr. –Matty 06:00, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Oh, the "meetings" I listed were all people who had come together. -Robyn
Users, who started an expedition together are in the graph, e.g. Harlequin and his dad. You and YawnWithExcitement are in now. Koepfel talk 15:25, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Nice work Koepfel!
Thank you for updating this so regularly! I imagine it must be a bit easier now that you have the Flash version because i see more frequent updates. I like this! I have a few more to add actually - geohashers who have met each other but haven't added their names on here. i'll do some investigating! :) -- sermoa 20:21, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, it's a little easier, especially since I no longer have to update two graphs, the one on the wiki and the one on my server (used to be a HTML imagemap). And yeah, finding old meetups is a hassle. Koepfel talk 20:55, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Invalid license key or license file version!
The Flash version gives a license error when zooming in. --Benpicco 02:27, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
- That's weird, works for me., what exactly does it say? I never liked the flash version anyway, though, will switch back to a png-based one (and also start updating it again) Koepfel talk
- It looks basically like this, after zooming in or moving the graph, happens both in firefox and chrome using the Adobe Flash plugin 10.0.42.34 on x86_64 ubuntu 9.10 --Benpicco 00:41, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
Updates
Since talk hasn't updated this in a while, I've been working on parsing the page, and made an updated version of this page itself at User:Hijackal/GraphPlayground. Are there any objections to replacing this page with mine? It isn't fully automated, but less than five minutes for me to generate a new graph, so if people remind me on IRC, there will be sufficiently frequent updates. Please let me know what you think. --Hijackal 16:16, 27 March 2012 (EDT)
- Awesome! No objections! -- relet 18:28, 27 March 2012 (EDT)
- Looks good so far. Definitely approve. -Haberdasher 18:39, 27 March 2012 (EDT)
- Considering yours can be updated with less effort than mine (and considering that I've been lazy on updating it (and on geohashing in general)), I'm okay with replacing it. Though the list you generate your graph from is missing a couple old, inactive users whose meetups I dug up from their userpages by hand, before even starting to make the list. These would still need to be added. Koepfel talk 16:08, 1 April 2012 (EDT)
- Why not add them to the list then? :D -- relet 17:11, 1 April 2012 (EDT)
"Flaws" in latest version
Hey Hijackal, I just noticed some small problems in the graph. M and EmmJay don't have a color, shouldn't they be red? Also I'm missing a link from Mampfred to relet although the entries in the list look fine. Apart from that - good work! :) - Mampfred 04:07, 10 April 2012 (EDT)
- Hi Mampfred, thanks for looking at the graph so closely.
- Regarding the color, the saturation is shows how long it has been since a user has edited the wiki (as the simplest metric I could think of that I hop hase some correlation to how active they are and whether it might be possible to meet them). [1] shows that M, for example, has no edits, so the script gives the "M" node no saturation at all.
- The missing link between you and relet - I have no idea why that is missing. I'll look into it, thanks for pointing it out. --Hijackal 09:59, 10 April 2012 (EDT)
- Ah, that's new then, in the past, the colors were solely based on the continent ... at least that's what I thought. M and Emmjay are quite active, in fact M did a multihash today (see the gallery). But the expedition reports are usually done by me or QuarterCacher. I'm not saying you should change your system but it could lead to confusion if the people don't read the whole description. Which they never do, right? :D - Mampfred 10:08, 10 April 2012 (EDT)
- The colors are now continuous (hue = average longitude of your expeditions), and all links should be in place. Also, activity is now judged by when a nick was last mentioned on an expedition page. Please let me know if you spot any other errors. --Hijackal 19:29, 10 April 2012 (EDT)
I noticed that for everyone with an underscore in the name, the graph doesn't show any activity (e.g. nick_mz, but also everyone else I checked). --Ekorren 03:48, 15 April 2012 (EDT)
Networking Achievement?
I know the idea itself isn't exactly new, but I think this could be taken serious.
You would get the achievement for being part of a meetup that connects previously unconnected groups of at least two people each. Or, which is the same, for reducing the number of unconnected groups on the graph. If several meetups accomplish the same connection on the same day, all of them count.
Connecting just yourself to a group or another single person which is not member of a group yet to your group wouldn't count. It will give the newcomer the meetup achievement anyway, since this only can happen if it's someone's first meetup in any case.
It may also happen that not everyone participating in the connecting meetup contributes to the connection - namely if it's a meetup of at least three, where one (A) is a first-time meetupper and the other two (B and C) members of unconnected groups. However, since that results in an indirect connection between B and C via A at the same time B and C are connected directly, I would accept giving the achievement to A as well. Kind of a bonus for attending larger meetups as your first.
It might be difficult to dig through the archives to find the old qualifying meetups, but probably worth it. It's an interesting part of geohashing history to see how the main group grew together.
--Ekorren 04:29, 15 April 2012 (EDT)
- Hijackal likes the idea of a "connecting things" achievement, although it may be too detached from actual hashing - too "meta". Thoughts:
- It should be awarded due to changes to the way the graph appears on the page, not due to actual order of meetups. If you connected two huge groups years ago, but it only gets added to the graph today, after the groups have been connected by someone else: bad luck. Otherwise, there would be ugly un-awarding edits.
- As a corollary from that, retroactive awards are not as hard to find - they only need to take into account past versions of the Meetup Graph page. Koepfels first graph was already quite large, it seems impossible to work backwards from there to find out who connected which parts when without making mistakes (which would result in aforementioned ugliness).
- Ekorrens criteria for awarding the graph are well thought through. "The achievement is awarded to all geohashers involved in a meetup that connects two previously disconnected subgraphs of the Meetup Graph." hopefully covers everything in one acceptably short sentence: there are no unmet nodes on the graph, so fist-time meeters will get the award iff they are part of a larger meetup involving people already on the graph, in different groups.
- A simple score could be awarded: the size of the smaller group.
- --Hijackal 12:02, 15 April 2012 (EDT)
- Agreed with the scoring based on the size of the smaller group, and no retroactive scoring. A good part of the idea is to "meet" other people, right? --Thomcat 16:44, 31 May 2012 (EDT)
