Geohashing Day

Saturday, May 21 is both Geohashing Day and Mouseover day. The Portland Hashpoint is in the river, so we're probably left with going retro to the 2009 geohashing day hashpoint. Any takers or other ideas? Jiml 15:02, 20 May 2011 (EDT)

May 22

I'm looking thoughtfully at this Portland hashpoint as well. It is up in Washington, on the middle median of I-205. I'd give up on it right there, but just a bit south I-205 becomes an overpass over a side road. It might be possible to go up between the two sides into the median and walk up to the hashpoint. I'll try Google Street view to see if it helps. Jiml 19:38, 20 May 2011 (EDT)

I'm sorry to report that Google Streetview shows a fence at the overpass, so looks like a no access. I guess I could see if I get close enough driving in the fast lane of the highway, but it would appear to be 50 feet. Jiml 20:37, 20 May 2011 (EDT)

A Modest Proposal

It took me a while to figure out what the "graticule hopping" posts were for, but I get it now: This page does double-duty as the log for the Portland graticule AND as the bulletin board for us Portland-area geohashers. But I still feel like it muddies the waters somewhat, and I'm wondering about how y'all would feel about separating the graticule hops out on a list of their own further down the page.

Secondarily, and admittedly rather trivially, I'd like to suggest we move over to the YYYY-MM-DD format on the Portland page. It's just more... geohashingy.

I'm fine with changing the date format if you want. (Mind you that the archives are in that same format, and I just copy the entries over to there.) I'm less sanguine about splitting the graticules apart. There really are no active geohashers in the adjacent graticules, and the "Portland" folks are the one who go to all of them, so I've always considered them Portland-offshoots, at least for the time being. McMinnville ones happen a third to half the time, since APR and I straddle the boundary, and the northern and southern ones only happen on very rare occasions Jiml 22:58, 26 February 2011 (EST)

The Talk:Vancouver, British Columbia page is used similarly, but we use a most-recent-first format, and move to the mettup page as soon as it is decided which graticule we will go to. We don't have much clutter problem. We move old talk to another page after a while. -Robyn 23:18, 20 May 2011 (EDT)

With the User:AperfectBot picking up expedition pages, we should move planning to the expedition page as soon as it becomes clear someone might actually go!

We're Quite the Graticule

I believe that, as of today, we've collectively mounted as many Portland graticule Expeditions in 2010 as we did in all of 2009. Throw in all of the McMinnville action and we're a global geohashing hotbed! For what that's worth....  : ) Michael5000 22:45, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Thomcat, Drache and NoTerminal had the first geohash in the world, and they had it in this graticule.  :) Wil 16:37, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

I completed my cleanup of the Portland page yesterday. The only thing I noticed that need help with is contacting Erin, who was at the 2008-05-26 geohash and who promised us pictures but never posted any. Wil 16:37, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Damn you all in Portland for having an active location. I am the only local to ever visit a Eugene location... It is hard to go when you know you will be the only one there. Grr.

It's a shame that none of the recent (and not-so-recent) expeditions have been written up so that the rest of us can enjoy reading about them. (Or did nobody actually go?
