"Baby pines are soft like fur coats in Narnia." Unless the spring and early summers rains have encouraged the growth of brambles and bracken. The pines were soft but the undergrowth was a problem. The bracken had grown to head height so you couldn't see the ground. Only the closest trees could be seen. And at ground level there were the brambles. Progress was slow, hot and sweaty and there were biting insects. On the approach I tried going under taller pines. The under-story growth was less dense but it was further to go. On the return I tried a more direct route. The track-log shows erratic progress in both cases. I'd left my departure a bit late so all this was taking place by torch-light in the dark. Classic stupidity distance!
