I was truly amazed by your 2008-09-01 49 -124 expedition. It should be highlighted in some way for all geohashers to see. I'm also from BC, the interior. The coincidences just start there: I also geohash with a Garmin Explorist 500, Nalgene water bottles, and MEC gear from head to toe. You even stole my awesome beard. I did ocean kayaking this summer for the first time, so I can relate with you on that bit. I hope to be in the lower mainland for this Saturday's meetup, so who knows. I do have some pictures, I had even started to make a page before my computer crashed mid-edit and forced me to start over. I will put one up soon. is there a handy template for making new write-ups? jumping back and forth between pages slowed me down somewhat. Straylight 06:19, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Hey again. Pictures are up, finally figured out the upload. Also updated the Drag-along achevement page with our respective hashes. By the way, nice work on your hat-trick (three days in a row) Straylight 08:58, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Hey man, thanks. I'm sorry again that I missed the morning meetup (plans changed the night before), but i'm sure that we'll meetup soon. I will post my pics as soon as I figure out the wiki's upload system. maybe i'll use yours as a template. I'm not even sure of the best way to get photo proof using my camera / GPS setup. Straylight 07:37, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Ok, thats a little early for me, how do we feel about 930-10? I'll for sure be there at that time, though I'll try to be early. Dollarton and Forester is a good back up location then. See you guys there!. Straylight 09:14, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Sweet!, lets say 0900 hours. I know that's a bit early, but what else do we have to do on a Sunday morning? Since the satellite images or pretty old, and the site looks like a construction zone, as a back up location we can meet at the intersection of Dollarton Hwy and Forester St (say, on the south east corner). I'm going to be wearing my "Science" shirt, and I'll have a black roadish bike with me too. Feel free to yell out "Hey Pi Guy!" at the top of your lungs from across the street. See you all tomorrow! Thepiguy 06:55, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
What Straylight said! I want to hit it up in the morning but wondering what time you'll be there! Sparks 04:52, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Hey, just in case you don't get the edit on the vancouver talk page, what time were you thinking about hitting sunday the 17th's geohash? Straylight 11:47, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Are you brave enough to try Saturday's hashpoint? I'd like to imagine that someone else will at least try!
Ooh, yeah, that cake is too small. I'll put the ribbon on your page when I get it made, though. -Robyn 16:35, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I like the upgrade on your user page. I'm not going to tell you when I'll be home, so you can be surprised when we finally meet at a hash. -Robyn 18:39, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh thank you for stopping by my user page to be encouraging. I was feeling the sting of defeat from Mother Nature and needed the reminder that I got 20 km closer to the geohash than if I didn't try, so I should be proud. I go now and meet my day. :-) -Robyn 11:30, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
$100 Wal-Mart boat? Don't be silly. If I wanted to get to a hash in the middle of the lake I'd buy a $5 Wal-Mart air mattress. Or maybe just swim. Today the hash is sitting there, in the middle of a road just waiting for me to rent a car. But I am strong. I will not turn to the dark side of geohashing. If only I could think of an excuse why I had to go there ... -Robyn 20:59, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

[hide]Bicycles hashes
I see. I had a little break, and the weather kinda sucks here now, but on wednesday i´ll hash, and that will be at least 40km, if the weather isn't too bad I'll make it 50-60 even. The weekend doesn't look to good here either, so I guess your 170km will be the longest for a while (assuming no one else shows up to compete). Don´t forget to take the lead on the Bicycle_Geohash page while you're at it. I like a bit of competition :)--Arvid 20:33, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Re: Muddy bike. That's exactly what I was thinking. "Ha, I'll bet a WalMart bike never worked so hard!" And I totally would have cried to see that much grit going through the chain and dérailleur of my real bikes, but my attitude here is that I have to get my money's worth, so work it as hard as I can. -Robyn 16:43, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
GPS tracklogs
I use http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map?form=googleearth to convert my .gdb (Garmin log)files into something google will display(kml, kmz). Should also work for .gpx files. --Arvid 03:13, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Minesweeper
Don't forget to upload those pictures so our truly awesome ribbon can go live. -Robyn 03:54, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
I was wondering whether you would update the same ribbon or take new ones for each mine unovered. ;)
OMG! You took out the spaces! --Robyn 05:51, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Current Plans
Nice work! Unless you paid for the tracklog it will disappear within a week though. That's why I always convert my tracklogs to something google will display.--Arvid 04:42, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
- PS: You know the XKCD-100 only counts for a saturday-meetup?
Location
For some reason I thought you lived in Germany. Not sure why. Maybe I confused you with Kliment? Anyway, wanted to let you know that I am very impressed by your biking geohashes. Keep up the good work :) --Joannac 23:54, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
Joanna, you're thinking of Relet or Arvid. Thepiguy is our own. -Robyn 07:47, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
My standard equipment
My bike bag always contains: 1 spare outer tyre, 1 spare inner tyre (both new). 1 fixed inner tyre. A pump. Stuff to fix a flat tyre. And some toolkit, including a chain rivet extractor. (already came in handy once) Maybe I should make a list and put it on my userpage. But first: another hash!--Arvid 07:29, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
I'm off work Thursday. If there's a good geohash I'll bring spare tubes. -Robyn 13:30, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
The busted tube that's in now, actually was my spare tube, I just punctured it while I was putting it on. It occurs to me now, that I should probably buy more than one tube at a time... Thanks for the offer though! Thepiguy 14:58, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
The spare outer tire is pretty impressive. I have a small chunk out of an old outer tire to use as a boot if the sidewall of an existing one gets badly slashed, but I don't carry a whole spare. I used to carry spare spokes, a spoke wrench, a chain breaker and links, and all kinds of wonderful stuff, but then I used to ride 200 km a day quite regularly, and consider 100 km to be an easy rest day. Maybe geohashing will get me back into fighting shape. -Robyn 15:27, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
I never understood the spare spokes. I hear it more often, but I cycled over 8000km now on my recumbent, and I never had a spoke broken. I use quite sensitive tires, if something destroys the anti-puncture layer, or gets annoyingly stuck in there, I just use the spare tire. I stopped carrying extra chain links, I can just remove a couple. I just have to think about not using some extreme gears. But a recumbent chain consists of three normal ones, so that might be of influence here. About the tires: I use foldable tires, of course. More expensive, but a lot easier to put in a bag. Or anywhere.--Arvid 15:57, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Wow, what kind of biking did you do? 200km a day is pretty intense!
- A whacko sport called Randoneering. It's not really a sport so much as a mental illness. -18:24, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
- So you're coming along at http://www.londonedinburghlondon.co.uk/?--Arvid 05:34, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, geohashing is a lot more rewarding. If only our graticule had better locations...
- And I think that bike trip would kill me. Although, I might be in Europe in July, maybe I could take a week off work to go biking. And a second and third week to off to recover... Thepiguy 15:40, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Out of curiosity, what kind of tires/tubes are on you recumbent? Are they the same as regular road tires, or something special? Thepiguy 17:27, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Pretty standard stuff, I have Schwalbe Marathon Racers now. Size 40-559 or 26x1.50. 26 inch is for mountainbikes here though. Normal bikes here all have 28 inch wheels. Recumbents in general just use standard tires. Only when you have a trike or anything else on more than 2 wheels, you might want to consider special tires, because of the sideway-forces. Recumbents often have 20" front and 26" rear though. But I think that's annoying spare-tire-wise.--Arvid 17:41, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Re:Würzburg
I'll be at Würzburg University until June and I'll be happy to meet you and srs0 when you come. I can't promise that I'll leave any graticules for you but if you bring fresh Dow Jones values we should find some nice hashpoints to visit. Danatar 17:33, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Boat Pics
Are you going to post your boat pics? I still have a few shots left in that disposable camera before I can get mine developed. -Robyn 03:15, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Come to think of it, are you swamped in homework or something? Make a noise so I know you're ok. -Robyn 05:52, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, me and srs have had a pretty rough week, school wise. I've been so tired and run down, I haven't even rode my bike all week. I bussed to a geohash on a bike route. That just isn't right.
Most of my water hash pictures didn't turn out though. They're just blurry messes. But I put up the decent ones, and a few more from the Nanaimo hash. Hope your pictures turn out well!
Just glad to note that you're still breathing. You have to meet Holly sometime. -Robyn 15:55, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
While you're editing random typos, would you approve the text for 2008-09-21 49 -124 by deleting the sentence at the beginning that says you will? -Robyn 04:54, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I forgot that was there. I whole-heartedly approve! Thepiguy 17:43, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
The Sunshine Coast
So, here in Australia, a section of the Queensland coast is called the Sunshine Coast. There is also a Horseshoe Bay there. Needless to say I was very confused for a while there. --joannac 05:05, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Wow! The world is so funny sometimes! :D Thepiguy 17:43, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Tough Week?
I haven't had a chance at a single hash all week so I decided to check in and see how you were doing. And damn, you don't have any either. I don't know whether I'd feel better if you had nabbed some, or worse if there had been nice easy ones all over Vancouver that I was missing. I went hiking today with some of my co-workers and I kept thinking about the geohash, but I couldn't come up with a good excuse to get them to go 20 km up the road and see if we could get down to the river when there were nice well-signed hikes closer to town. -Robyn 04:49, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
No, it's been a disappointing week over here. The best bet for the entire weekend was the hash in the watershed. Although, what with Arvid's recent accomplishment I think I'll have to make a trip down to the states. I've got a "friend" (sudo brother-in-law I guess) who wants to get into Triathlons and says he'll come biking with me, but he gave me a funny look when I asked him if he had a passport.
- Rotfl! Remnds me of the comic about long walks on the beach. "Bring a tent!" I so have to do endurance geohashing, but we have to go somewhere where there's a cance in hell of succeeding. Maybe Saskatchewan. -Robyn 15:13, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
Good to hear your having fun! I'm sure you'll get a good location soon... or just get fed up and hike off into the forest... Thepiguy 14:57, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, the problem is that as soon as the weather is suitable to work I have to be THERE, not in the middle of the forest. On the last job there were two pilots so I would take the morning shift and be done for the day at 3 p.m. Now I'm not released until dark.
- I got to see ICWB again!!!
Snow cycling
I don't think your amount of snow is anywhere near comparable with what we sometimes get. We get a couple of cms max. Once or twice a year. It might be slippery (sometimes extremely) so you have to be very very careful, especially under braking and cornering. This goes for frozen rain as well. I never tried to cycle through more than 10cm of snow, maybe not even 5cm. If we get that much it's cleaned up pretty fast, and it only happens once every 5yrs or so.
You'd better ask Ekorren. In the his area there's more snow. We just get very dark rainy and foggy weather just above 0°C for now.
In any cycling event you should have a back-up plan. On a short trip that might be walk home, on a longer walk to a trainstation. In cold conditions something with warm clothes.
And what is regual weather?
