The Cape May, NJ graticule is at 38 N, -74 W. It has very little land area, as it includes only the lower third of Cape May County. It comes within 10 miles of land in Delaware and Maryland as well, and includes part of the route for the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

It has approximately 25 sq mi of land, one third of which could be considered wetlands, in a graticule that measures 3,800 sq mi. So there's a one chance in 150 to 200 of a land-based geohash. While this might be a problem for land-lubbers, a fair number of people in the area own boats or know someone who does, so geohashes in Delaware Bay, or a few miles off Cape May or Wildwood are fair game.

Or, according to Land usage, there is:

99.83%	Water
0.08%	Settlements
0.06%	Roads
0.03%	Highways
0.01%	Other Land

Also to our benefit, raptors don't swim well, and aquaraptors haven't been seen any further south than Montauk, NY in ages.

The bad news is, zombies don't drown.

Jevanyn spends one or two weeks vacation in the area every year, and a few weekends besides.

Watergeohash.jpg A Christmas geohsh treat! The geohash is only 10 yards off the beach at Wildwood, straight in line with Rio Grande Ave. Yes, it's cold, but that's what jet skis are for :-)

Drownedrat.png Rare double: Saturday and Sunday geohashes are only a few miles apart in the wetlands, Saturday near Stone Harbor and Sunday close to Avalon.

State Hunting and Fishing Grounds, southeast of Fortescue.

Watergeohash.jpg Within a mile of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry route, just on the Delaware side of the bay.

  • 9/3/08

Off Assateague Island in Maryland. The AC geohash is much closer: in the wetlands near Delmont.

  • 9/2/08

Watergeohash.jpg A quarter-mile off the beach at Cape May Point State Park. This is another spot I passed close to on August 23rd.

Watergeohash.jpg A half-mile off the beach near Avalon.

Watergeohash.jpg Near Jenkins Channel, between North Wildwood and Stone Harbor. Jevanyn was there, but didn't know the geohash was!

  • 7/29/08

Watergeohash.jpg Less than a mile off Diamond Beach. Take a tour boat out through Cape May Inlet.

  • 5/9/2008

Along a creek between the Parkway and Route 9, close to Exit 0.

  • 3/10/08

Off the back bay of Jarvis Sound, in a waterway called Reubens Thorofare. East of the Parkway at around mile marker 2, opposite the Cape May National Golf Club.

  • 3/8/08

Two miles south off Cape May beach. Do we have any good swimmers, or someone with a boat? ;-)

  • 2/27/08

Three miles east off the North Wildwood beach.

  • 2/6/08

Four miles south of Broadway Beach.

  • 2/4/08

Near Higbees Beach Road and Bayshore Road, south of the canal. Note: Higbees Beach is clothing optional. W00t!

Footnotes

By trapezoidal estimate, the area of the graticule is 69 x 69 x cos(37.5) = 3,800 miles.
