Expedition

3°C almost felt warm after a weekend around 0°C, and I wanted to try out a new bike component I got for Christmas, so I brought the bike along on an S8 train (every 20 minutes). This route first heads northeast out of Berlin through Pankow before turning west across some cropland near Schönfließ. By the time the train reached Hohen Neuendorf after 40 minutes, I was ready for lunch, so a restaurant stop was the first order of business.

I followed the main street west and trailed another cyclist into a construction zone, where I discovered that passage under the east-west rail tracks currently requires descending a set of stairs. Then Garmin routed me a bit farther than necessary into the Niederheide neighborhood, but at least that gave me a glimpse of the Havel river.

Various neighbors were out and about on the street, so I tried to be inconspicuous. From in front of the appropriate gate, my GPS position first came close to the point, then drifted a bit south. As I considered reaching to the top of the gate, I was interrupted by a loud bark from the yard, and a fluffy dog who was eager to guard appeared on the other side of the fence. So I retreated across the street for photos.

I found my own way out of Niederheide. When approaching the tracks this time, I noticed a sign for a bike detour, so I followed it a long and hilly way around. Back at the S-Bahn station, I opted to wait a few extra minutes for another S8 to avoid changing trains.
