Thepiguy and srs0 decided to make a day trip out to Nanaimo in what turned out to be a failed attempt.

We left UBC at around 9:30 and biked to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. Along the way we were interrupted by some sort of festival along Spanish banks, and got lost in Stanley park (the sea wall apparently is one way for bycicles!) We arrived at the ferry terminal at 12:47 only to discover they stopped selling tickets for the 12:55 ferry at 12:45. We had some lunch and caught the 2:30 boat instead.

Once we got to Nanaimo we traveled down the highway towards Duke Point. Based on google, our plan was to start on the highway, follow a tree line for a short distance and then make our way into the bush. Unfortunately, the tree line turned out to be a rather sizable gorge and we were so behind schedule (because of the missed ferry) that we only had time to take a few pictures and rush to catch our ferry home. We were around 500m at the closest point, and had we had time, probably could have found a way around.

We made it to our ferry (with a few minutes to spare!) and ended up sleeping most of the way. We then biked home from Tsawassen (caught a bus through the tunnel) and through Stevsten. Srs0 got a flat tire about 15 minutes from my house, so we walked the rest of the way and drove back to UBC.

Although we failed to reach the location we still had a fun time! We ended up biking around 100km, ate some deliciouses food and learned a valuable lesson about our beloved ferry system.

It turns out that another passenger who missed their ferry in a similar manner was also a reporter for the Vancouver Sun! He had been behind us in line while we were all trying to get tickets, and asked us how we felt about the ticket cut-off.

The article was published in the Vancouver Sun the very next week!
