Location

The hash is located on the Eibsee, a rather large mountain lake within of the Zugspitz mountain range, just below the highest peak in Germany.

Links:

Transport there

The Eibsee can be reached by bus or rack railway. Bayern-Tickets are probably valid on the bus, but not on the rack railway.

The Zugspitzbahn is a narrow gauge mountain railway which goes up to the highest peak of Germany. From the station of Grainau up it's running as a rack railway. Tickets to the peak are 42 EUR round trip, but tickets until Eibsee (which is already well into the rack railway part) are much cheaper, probably around 5 EUR one way.

Timetables

Attention, all y'all: SEV! (I guess there ain't no good translation for words as truly German as Schienenersatzverkehr... but maybe shi#y exceptional vehicle counts?) There is construction work going on along the rail tracks between Tutzing and Weilheim. Trains do not run there and are substituted by buses. Please make sure you check the online schedules on DB's website because they take the extra buses into account! Please note that bikes are probably not an option because they may not be taken onto the buses (or only very few bikes may be allowed)! --Zb 20:02, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I've seen that, and decided against bringing my bike (which would be of no use anyway, because the BZB gets us right up to the lake). --dawidi 20:13, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Kayaks or other large things may also be a major problem on SEV buses! --Zb 20:15, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

from Würzburg

local traffic

  • Start at Würzburg 6:41 , arrival at Treuchtlingen 8:30
  • continuing at 8:35 (5 minutes), arrival at Augsburg 9:30
  • continuing at 9:51 , arrival at Weilheim 11:16
  • continuing at 12:11 , arrival at Garmisch-P. 12:56
  • Bus from Garmisch 13:04 arrives at the Eibsee at 13:45
Why not 5:31 and be there an hour earlier? The more time to explore the area, the better. --Ekorren 17:55, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

That would be:

  • Start at Würzburg 5:31, arrival at Treuchtlingen 7:30
  • continuing at 7:35, arrival at München 9:34
  • continuing at 10:12, arrival at Weilheim 11:06
  • continuing at 11:11, Garmisch 11:57
  • Bus 12:14 arrives 12:35

Return:

  • Bus at 17:10 arrives at Garmisch 17:51
  • Train at 18:04 arrives at Weilheim 18:49
  • continue at 18:53 (4 minutes), arrival at Augsburg 20:09
  • then either continue at 20:28, arrival at Treuchtlingen 21:20, continue at 22:25, arrival at Würzburg 0:06
  • or visit Augsburg hashpoint (might still be too far), continue at 21:18, arrival at Nürnberg 22:25, continue at 23:35, arrival at Würzburg 0:56

ICE

(by srs0?) I'm sure the above way is probably cheaper, but I have surgery at 06:30 Monday morning, so arriving home past midnight isn't an option for me. Here's my idea from Würzburg:

  • Start at Würzburg at 08:31, arrival at München at 10:41 (ICE 581)
  • Continuing at 11:12, arrival at Tutzing at 11:39 (RB 30613)
  • Continuing at 11:46, arrival at Weilheim(Oberbay) at 12:06 (Bus)
  • Continuing at 12:11, same as above from here.

38.00 euro with a BahnCard50

Return:

  • Same to Weilheim(Oberbay)
  • Continuing at 18:54, arrival at Tutzing at 19:14 (Bus)
  • Continuing at 19:20, arrival at München at 19:48 (RB 5424)
  • Continuing at 20:20, arrival at Würzburg at 22:35 (ICE 780)

38.00 euro with BahnCard50. (Round trip 76 euro each with BahnCard50.)

So much less time in transit, and I can hopefully get a couple hours more of sleep before my surgery. So Danatar/thepiguy, would you be open to taking that instead? --srs0?

You could also part from the group for the ICE part alone, only pay for that extra, and join the group ticket for the rest of the trip. --Ekorren 17:55, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes, the second version was by me (srs0). Also, since I don't actually know any of the plans yet (and asking thepiguy resulted in "I don't know, I'm not doing any of the planning"), what's the transportation outline? Ekorren mentioned a group ticket, so I assume that means the idea was to buy a 5-person ticket and use that? If so, I'll gladly pay for the ICE part and connection myself and re-join with the group in Weilheim. -Srs0 18:07, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes, the plan definitely would be a Bayern-Ticket for all of you. If someone has some leftoevr money to throw away, I'll gladly take it because for me it's going to be much more expensive as I need to come from Baden-Württemberg and probably alone. I was about to cancel the idea because of that. --Ekorren 18:13, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

I vote for leave earlier for more time at the lake! 2km in a foot powered paddle boat is going to be hard... Thepiguy 18:16, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

I vote for the current schedules, as I need the rest. Normally I wouldn't care about lack of sleep, but right now I have to. -Srs0 18:28, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I don't think the difference in lack of sleep is so much significant because of starting one hour earlier or later, while the difference in the time available at the destination is really significant because it's short enough already. We could aim at being back at a station an hour earlier and in case something goes wrong fall back to the original timetable, and otherwise see what to do with the time. --Ekorren 18:46, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I hesitate to say that, but... as great as it would be to have you in the party, I'm not so sure whether it is a good idea to do that trip with a broken wrist. I definitely wouldn't have done it after my accident last year. If something happens, you might get in trouble with your insurance. --Ekorren 18:46, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I guess he's talking about lack of sleep AFTER the expedition, before surgery, and he has a point there. We could use local trains for the way to the hashpoint and split up on the way back (srs0 ICE, rest local trains). For me the ICE is too expensive, since I don't have a BahnCard and it would cost me 150 Euros (180 if I buy a BahnCard). There should be no insurance problem with the arm, since it is in the cast and we'll take care of it. Sitting at home versus in the train should make no difference. - Danatar 18:52, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
We can all take the local at 5:31, which gets us to the lake around 12:30, and then me and srs0 can take the ICE back. Thepiguy 20:06, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

from München

In case I join in, my schedule would be included in almost all of the above. Leave München at 9:12 or at 10:12 both sound like good options for me. I know some of you have a trip quite longer than mine, but for me, 9:12 would be o.k. --Zb 20:12, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Other stuff

How warm would the water be this time of year? Warm enough for say... swimming? Thepiguy 19:35, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Probably very cold. --Ekorren 19:49, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Crap. Too late to back out now. Anyone a life guard? I"m not sure if I remember how to swim. Thepiguy 20:14, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Have you seen the pedal boats with the slip'n'slide on the back, dude? --Zb 20:21, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
