Location

The location is close to Giessendam, just a few meters from the road. Right next to the hash location, the road crosses over a cargo railway known as the Betuweroute.

Location

Expedition by Joris

Giessendam is close to Werkendam, on the opposite side of the river Boven-Merwede. As Werkendam was the target of my my previous hash, I'm getting to know this part of the graticule quite well. I didn't even bother to make a map.

I arrived by bicycle around 15:45 and walked around for about 20 minutes. The location was laughably easy to reach by simply walking a few meters away from the road. This is actually how I prefer things; I guess I'm not the fence-climbing type of hasher.

Geotrash

As I was preparing to leave, my eye was caught by an empty beer can. It reminded me of the Geotrash idea, so I picked up the can to take it with me. Just as I was congratulating myself with this good deed, I noticed another empty can... I ended up collecting about 15 empty beer cans (mostly Heineken), and the bags they came in, and even an empty beer bottle (Grolsch). All these objects were found in a radius of maybe 20 meters from the hash point.

I was shocked.

On the way home, I noticed the huge amount of waste in the sides of the road. The pieces of waste are lying literally just a few meters apart. Again mostly empty beer cans, but also lots of plastic bottles. I had never realized that the situation is this bad.

On my next geohash trip, I'll bring a large plastic bag and fill it completely. Even if there is no waste at the geohash location, I could easily fill the bag on the way home. If all geohashers work together, hopefully we can still save our graticule. Who is with me?
